Is the 11-11-11 Phenomenon Real?

I was recently surfing the web and came across a trailer for this upcoming horror movie entitled 11-11-11.

I’m pretty sure that someone at the movie studio noticed that 11-11-11 falls on a Friday, so, they made a gimmicky-scary flick to tie into the date. You can’t blame them for that. It’s kind of clever, even if the movie isn’t.

Still, I was curious to why a movie studio would invest into what looks to be a rather lame film. I mean, we didn’t have a 10-10-10 film last year. Is something going to happen to us on 11-11-11? Or, is it just wishful thinking?

It depends who you ask.

For numerologists, new-age people and gamblers, 11-11-11 is important. They believe it’s lucky and can open the doorway to you inner self. They also believe that when you see 11:11 on a clock, for example, you’ll keep seeing the sequence. They believe that that is your spirit guide tying to grab your attention. ABC earlier this year even did an article mentioning that couples were trying to conceive their child’s birth so that the kid will be born on the date. Couples were also attempting to get hitched on the day as well.

For other people that may be perceived as a bit out there, 11-11-11 will be the day that a portal from another universe opens, which means, some pretty nasty things could occur, which is the plot for the previously mentioned film.

I guess that for the second group of people they associate the sequence as a negative connotation, since the Mayans predicted that the world will end on December 21, 2012 at 11:11. Although they were specific, they weren’t kind enough to tell us what exact time zone that will be.

Throughout history, however, there haven’t been many historically significant events to give us reason for believing that something will happen on 11-11-11. The only two worth mentioning took place in the 20th Century.

The first event happened on November 11, 1911, and, was called the The Great Blue Norther of 11-11-11. This phenomenon was a strange weather occurrence in the central part of the United States. Essentially, many areas had a record high temperature during the day and proceeded to experience record low temperatures by night thanks to an extremely strong storm system separating warm, humid air from frigid, arctic air. The other historical event was the end of World War I on November 11, 1918.

Simply put, people are fascinated by this particular number sequence because it is unique, if you’re into math. Since I’m horrible at math, let’s have it explained for us.

The numerical sequence of November 11 holds a special significance in the binary numeral system, which is the base-2 number system that represents numeric values using two symbols, 0 and 1. The date of November 11 has a binary number of 111110 where it has a decimal equivalent of 62 in the year 2010, and a binary number of 111111 with a decimal equivalent of 63 in the year 2011.

The number eleven has a special characteristic in mathematics where it is the sixth prime number. It contains some interesting peculiarities where the number eleven times itself equals a palindrome:

      (2 digits) 11 x 11 = 121
      (6 digits) 111111 x 111111 = 12345654321
      (9 digits) 111111111 x 111111111 = 12345678987654321

That’s some interesting stuff right there, but back to our original question. Is something bad going to happen to us?

Probably not.

Just looking at history, we’ve seen that the Earth, and people, have come out of 11-11-11 unscathed. If something strange happens to you on 11-11-11 it’s probably just a coincidence, because math tells us so.

Regardless, we’d love to hear you thoughts on the 11-11-11 phenomenon.
