Porn vs. The Internet: Whose is Bigger?

Here’s an interesting debate topic. What’s more popular, porn or the internet?

I bet your initial gut reaction is the internet. While it’s been around in some form since the 1960s, it became more mainstreamed by the mid-1990s. Since then, the internet has had an impact on culture and commerce like nothing else in recent history. As of March of 2011, it’s been estimated that 2.095 billion people (30.2% of world population) are internet users.

Porn, on the other hand, is just as old as civilization, at least in some format. The pornography that we’re accustomed to today, however, didn’t arrive until the Victorian era, which occurred in the mid to late 1800s, and did include motion pictures. Studies in 2001 discovered that the industry made between $2.6 billion and $3.9 billion.

So, the bigger question should be did the internet make porn more popular and profitable or vice versa?

In a way they’ve both helped each other. After-all, it was the porn industry that was the first to employ technologies that we now use everyday, such as as geo-location, videostreaming and e-commerce.

To see what the porn industry looks like today, our friends at SEJ put together an info-graphic to illustrate how porn impacts internet searches.
