Instagram, Makes Photo-sharing Deal with Hipstamatic

Considered as one of the fastest growing social networks, Instagram was able to triple its user base up to 27 million in the last six months, even though it’s only available for iPhone. And while the photo-sharing app can push images to other social network, it can’t post images from other services.

But that’s all about to change. Last March 21, digital photography application for iPhone Hipstamatic announced its partnership with Instagram. The deal will enable iPhone users take a photo using the camera app, stylize it and post it on the photo-sharing site with just one click.

As explained by Hipstamatic CEO and Co-founder Lucas Buick:

“We thought it was time we help our users out by making it a little bit easier than having to shoot with Hipstamatic, open Instagram, try to crop it, and then hashtag all of the equipment that they use.”

Instagram: Opening is Platform to Other Sources

Hipstamatic’s partnership with Instagram represents the latter’s reception to other application, as it open its platform to third parties. This goes in line with the photo-sharing app’s move towards letting images flow freely into their network from outside source and other devices, as it’s soon to roll out its Android version.

Kevin Systrom, CEO and co-founder of Instagram, shared to Fast Company:

“Really it all comes down to this: People post Hipstamatic photos on Instagram all the time, and we just want to make the experience easier. It’s a step in the direction that we’re testing out. We’ve been very careful about making sure that Instagram photos are about what’s happening right now in your life, and we want to allow for more of those photos to end up on Instagram regardless of where they’re taken.”

Thus, users can now snap a photo using Hipstamatic, and they will have an option to push it on Instagram, the same way Foursquare users push their check-in to Twitter. They can also auto-tag their images with the particular lens, film and flash used, and comment straight from the camera app. Once posted on Instagram, the photo will have an attribution of “Taken with Hipstamatic.”

A Win-win Situation

Systrom and Buick see the partnership as a win-win situation. The deal will enable Hipstamatic to increase its awareness and revenue, while Instagram will be established as a social network and will have access to a community of high-quality content creators who upload an estimated 48 million of images every month.
