The History of Calvin Klein

First started in 1968, the Calvin Klein brand is based in Midtown Manhattan, New York. Known mostly for both sex underwear, the company was actually first established as a coat shop in the York Hotel on a budget of 10,000 dollars. The very first Calvin Klein line was winter coats for both men and women. In the year 1969, Calvin Klein was featured on the cover of Vogue Magazine, giving the company its first taste of fame. By the year 1971, designers added sportswear, classic blazers and lingerie to the brand. This helped lead the company to sales of 100 million by the year 1978. By 1981, Calvin Klein himself was pocketing around 8.5 million dollars a year. In the 1970s the company tried its luck at creating its own fragrance that bombed completely, leaving the company with low moral. Then the 1990s came around and the brand featured Mark “Marky Mark” Wahlberg on public billboards in a pair of men’s underwear known as “Calvins.” This was huge for the company and money profits soared through the roof. These same billboard advertisements are still talked about today. In the year 1992, Calvin again tried his luck at creating a fragrance line and this time it being very successful. In 2008, the brand started to sponsor America’s Next Top Male Model, awarding the winner with a 100,000 dollar modeling contract as well as a runway show to help launch their professional modeling career.

As far as the designing goes, the male direction is managed by Kevin Carrigan, an Englishman, acting as the creative director. In 2004, when the company needed a website, the brand bought the “” domain name becoming one of the only corporations in the world to own a two letter domain name.
