Billy Reid’s Unique Designs

Billy Reid is an American fashion designer known for making classic styles in high quality fabrics and with unique accents.  His style has been described as lo-fi, Southern-bred luxury. Billy Reid was raised in Amite, Louisiana, which is just south of the Mississippi state line. He got his start in the clothing industry by working in his grandmother’s clothing boutique in her home. Later he attended the Art Institute of Dallas, where he studied design and merchandising, which led to a job working for Saks Fifth Avenue. After that, he took a job with Reebok, which lasted six years.  There he was given the opportunity to travel across the globe with the first Greg Norman collections. It wasn’t until the year 1995 when Reid first decided to start his own company.

Returning to his country roots, he set up headquarters in downtown Florence, Alabama. He now has stores located on Bond Street in New York City and Highland Park Village in Dallas, as well as in the cities of Nashville, Charlotte, Charleston, and Houston. These stores are known for their feel of faded elegance; for example, the store in New York City is decorated with faded chairs and carpets, antique chandeliers, mounted deer heads, and antique cabinets. His clothes are also available for sale in dozens of Bloomingdale’s stores across the United States. There is even a line of K-Swiss shoes by Billy Reid.

Today I’m showing you the Billy Reid Spring 2012 Orleans shirting collection, offered in many different styles and colors. All shirts are 100% cotton and made in Italy, and feature barrel cuffs, a curved bottom, natural mother-of-pearls buttons, and a hidden button-down collar that gives the shirt the appearance of having a straight collar.  Billy Reid’s designs are timeless. In the year 2001, he won the CFDA “Best New Menswear Designer” award. New York Magazine named his New York retail store “Best Men’s Store” in 2008. In 2010, GQ Magazine crowned Reid the “Best New Menswear Designer in America.” Lastly, in the year 2010, he was awarded the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Prize. Billy Reid’s clothing is very traditional and very American. He also offers great leather shoes, luggage, Levi’s, and men’s furnishing such as books and caps. Another item worth mentioning is the Selvage Jack Chino straight-fit pants made with 100% selvage cotton, antique front zippers, and natural horn buttons.
