What You Should Do When a Website Doesn’t Load Correctly

It is really annoying when you visit a particular website and you found out that it’s not working properly. This could happen for a lot of reasons, and these are not obvious most of the time. Good thing, there are ways on how you can detect and fix majority of these problems.

Using Another Browser

The simplest thing that you can do is opening a problematic site on a new browser. It may cause you some headache from now on, but there are some workarounds available to make it easier. Firefox has an Open With extension, which allows you to right-click on any link and open it in another browser that you like. Google Chrome doesn’t offer the same feature, although you can simply drag-and-drop a URL from Chrome’s omnibar to Firefox’s tab bar.

Changing User Agent

Websites that don’t usually work in a particular browser means that the page has not yet been updated for a while. If a website doesn’t work in Chrome, it means that the page wasn’t updated to work with the browser since its release. You can address this issue by changing your browser’s user agent. A user agent is a string of text that tells a website what browser you’re using.

Google Chrome

If you’re using Google Chrome, you can change its user agent by going to Tools > Developer Tools > Settings > Override User Agent. As long as the Developer Tools window is open, you will be able to change your browser’s user agent. As soon as it’s closed, Chrome will restore its original user agent. However, downloading User Agent Switcher can make things easier.

Mozilla Firefox

Other than its own User Agent Switcher, you can change Firefox’s user agent by typing “about:config” in the address bar. Tell your browser that you’ll be careful, and then right-click on the page and go to New > String. At the string name section, type the “general.useragent.override” and then add the user agent string, which you can find on the Internet, as a value.

However, not everything can be addressed by changing your browser’s user agents. That’s because there are some old websites that haven’t been update for years. There are also few sites nowadays that deny user agent-based access.

Nevertheless, these are all just workarounds that you can use in case that you’re having problems loading a website. There are various ways on how you can address this issue. All you have to do is take advantage of the power that Internet has given you.
