Game publisher Riot Games launched their League of Legends title in Romania yesterday. Other than the title, gamers from the said country could also take advantage of the localized service and support. The game’s Romanian version is fully localized, including its voiceover, game text, dedicated player support and community staff, and online community website.

As stated by Riot Games CEO Brandon Beck:

“Whenever we look at bringing League of Legends to a new community, it’s important to us that we provide the same quality of service that our players around the world would have come to expect. That means we needed to go all the way: To provide full Romanian language support, to hire Rioters who really understand the needs of Romanian gamers, and to kick off the Romanian eSports scene right with a launch tournament and celebration.”

Developing League of Legends

The idea of Defense of the Ancients having a spiritual successor came to life at the end of 2005. League of Legends was born when a number of active DotA community members believe that the gameplay represents the birth of a new genre that deserves to be its own professional game.

When Riot Games opened its office in September 2006, co-founders Brandon Beck and Marc Merrill partnered with Steve “Guinsoo” Feak and Steve “Pendragon” Mescon—the creative minds behind DotA All Stars. With the help of 100 more people, they worked on League of Legends.

Merrill revealed that they’ve decided to open the champion creation process to everyone in the company instead of leaving it to a few people. The champion will be created based on a template, and then they will vote on which will make it into the game.

General Gameplay

League of Legends, also known as LoL, is an action real-time strategy video game that is inspired by the popular Defense of the Ancients maps for Warcraft III. Players are formed into two teams of either 3v3 or 5v5.

Each team starts at the opposing sides of the map called Spawning Pool. The goal of the game is destroy the other team’s area called Nexus in order to win. This could be done by destroying a series of Turrets that are placed along a path called Lane, which leads to the base of the opposing team.

Gamers could gain levels along the way from killing their opponent’s champions and minions, and defeating neutral monsters. Every kill will also reward them with gold that they could use to purchase items to make their champions stronger.

To celebrate the launching of League of Legends in Romania, the finale of the first Romanian LoL Tournament is scheduled on June 2, at Flanco Store’s Unirea Shopping Center in Bucharest.
