At the recent Electronic Entertainment Expo, Nintendo showed off its new Wii U along with the some of the titles that will be available for the console. Mario and Zelda creator Shigery Miyamoto opened the company’s press conference with the device, which was announced at the same event last year. Although a lot of details were already announced last Sunday, Nintendo gave an in-depth presentation at the E3 2012 event.

Pikmin 3

One of the first games for the Wii U will be Pikmin 3, a cult puzzle/management game that features colorful plants. The gamepad will show the game’s detailed map as the action takes place on TV. Players can control four characters at once, although series regular Captain Olimar is absent from the game altogether.

Super Mario Bros. U

New Super Mario Bros. U was also announced in the event, which will follow the same side scrolling of Super Mario Bros. 2. Mario will boast new animal attire that enables him to glide like a sugar glider. The game will also feature a new boost mode, which will let players control the game’s environment using the gamepad, while others control the character using a Wiimote.

Batman: Arkham City

Warner Bros. President Martin Tremblay announced that Batman: Arkham City Armored Edition will also be released for Wii U. The gamepad will act as a control panel to manage Batman’s gadgets. It can also activate the new super-powered BAT mode after a meter is filled through fighting.

Lego City: Undercover

Gamers can turn their Wii U gamepad into a crime-fighting tool with Lego City: Undercover. The touch screen can be used to navigate the city and scan areas for criminals. It will also feature full-voice acting compared to the Simlish speech that was used on the game’s predecessor.

Ubisoft for Wii U

Ubisoft President Yves Guillmot, together with Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime, introduced a couple of Ubisoft titles that will arrive on the Wii U:

  • Zombi U
  • Assassin’s Creed 3
  • Just Dance 4
  • Rayman Legends
  • Avengers: Battle for Earth

Nintendo Land

Other than the game titles, Fils-Aime also announced the upcoming availability of Nintendo Land, a virtual theme park that is being developed by Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort creator Katsuya Eguchi. The virtual theme park will basically serve as a hub for multiplayer and social networking. It will be launched together with the Wii U in time for the holidays.
