Apple showed off its upcoming OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion during their annual Worldwide Developers Conference last Monday. The upcoming operating system is packed with new features such as Mac dictation, tighter iCloud integration, Power Nap and a better Safari web browser.

Inside the Mountain Lion

Apple’s Head of Mac Software Craig Federighi introduced the new OS X 10.8 during a keynote at WWDC 2012, and took the opportunity to bring the spotlight on the software’s iCloud integration. This includes the “Documents in the Cloud”, wherein users can access their files anywhere. The Notes and Reminders apps were also added to the iCloud website, which makes it available from anywhere using any Apple device that has data connection.

Additionally, the OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion will feature “dictation for Mac”, which will also be available for the new iPad. However, this doesn’t offer the same personal assistant functionality provided by Siri.

Also included in the forthcoming operating system is the new Safari. It now has a unified smart search field and iCloud Tabs, which synchronizes open website across Apple devices. The web browser also has a feature called Tabview that allows users to zoom out and see all of the tabs that are currently open in Safari.

Another Mountain Lion feature that was announced during the event is the Power Nap. It updates a device and backs up data automatically while the machine is sleeping. Other than that, it silently refreshes data and is power-efficient. This feature will be compatible with the second-generation MacBook Air and the next-generation MacBook Pro.

Developer Preview and Known Issues

After showing off the features included in the software, Apple will roll out the operating system’s fourth developer preview on Monday. Although it is nearly done, there were reports of know issues on the Mountain Lion. This includes trouble entering a Wi-Fi password, which occurs when an incorrect log in window is displayed every time FileVault is enabled. There were also known issues with the software’s Game Center, as well as AMD and NVIDIA graphics cards.

Price and Availability

Apple also announced during the event that users who will buy a new Mac starting today until the Mountain Lion is released will get the OS X 10.8 for free. The new operating system will be available on the Mac App Store this July for $19.99.
