It’s no secret that the 21st century man likes to pamper himself. Whether they make regular manscaping appointments or get monthly mani/pedis, men these days like to look and feel good. In the not-so-distant-past, however, doing these sort of rituals were primarily done by women, but most of us aren’t really bothered by that. It doesn’t mean we’re any less manly.

There’s another area of the body that men are starting to pay attention to and care for. Actually, it’s a pretty big area. And, it’s a guy’s skin. While it may seem pointless, or too difficult to do regularly, taking care of your skin has more overall health benefits than you know, and it can be a simple process in your daily routine.

So, to help you better take care of your man-hide, here are five skin care tips for real men.

Eating Healthy

We’ve all heard this expression before. You are what you eat. And, that applies to healthy skin as well. Dr. Dieter Kuster, CEO and senior chemist for Doctor Schwab, states that “diet is the fuel you need to keep going and bring the beauty from within”. He suggests that we begin “with at least one green vegetable a day then move to lean cuts of meat,” and course, drink lots of water.


With a proper diet, or at least eating healthy or healthier, should come some exercising. We’re not going to bore you with the benefits of exercise (you should already know how beneficial it is for your health), but it can also help out your skin. Simply put, exercising cleans out pores that are filled with all sorts of toxins.

Properly Shaving

We’ve devoted several articles here at AMOG to shaving products and how to properly shave. If you missed some of them, the gist is that shaving correctly will give you a cleaner and smoother face without irritation, razor burn, or ingrown hairs.  After you’ve got a good shave, don’t forget to perfect time to cleanse, exfoliate and moisturize your skin. All three are vital to having healthy skin.

Use Sunscreen

Whether you work outside or just enjoy spending time out in the sun, don’t forget to use sunscreen. You should be aware that the sun has UVA and UVB rays that can be dangerous to us. Besides damaging your skin they can also cause aging and cancer. Besides adding sunscreen to your body, you should protect your lips, as well.  Since the skin in this area is thin and lacks oil glands to keep it naturally moist and protected against UV rays, it needs some extra attention. To prevent severe dryness, cracking, bleeding, and burning from exposure to the elements, it’s recommended that you apply lip balm with a hint of SPF regularly once a day

Cleanse, Exfoliate, and Moisturize

As mentioned earlier, perhaps the most important tip to having healthy skin is to cleanse, exfoliate and moisturize, which can be done when you shave.

Cleansing is by far the most important thing you can do for your skin, specifically your face. This is because you need to wash out all of the dirt and excess oil that has accumulated on the skin surface, which can lead to breakouts. Instead of a bar soap you should stick with just a basic gel that should be used at least once a day.

If you’re looking for a deeper clean, then you need to exfoliate. This will get all that junk out from within the pores. A good scrubbing that exfoliates should only be done two or three times a week—it could do more damage if done too much. Besides cleaning out the pores, exfoliating also loosens hair follicles, which gives you that clean and smooth shave.

Finally, moisturizing is a necessity since your skin is bound to dry out throughout the day. It’s recommended that you regularly employ a light moisturizer on your face, especially after cleansing and shaving. If you’re looking for an intensive humidity treatment use pure vitamin E, or aloe vera oil. The liquid form can also be used by opening a capsule and applying the oil directly to the skin. This method is also great for the neglected area under the eye.
