Podcast App for iPhone and iPad Now Available

Last Tuesday, Apple launched its new application, Podcasts, in the iOS App Store.  It is designed to help users discover and download Internet content. The 8.8 MB app is available now via download for both iPhone and iPad from the App Store. It is also compatible with iOS 5.1 or later.

Podcasts app is the easiest way to discover, subscribe, and play your favorite podcasts on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. Explore hundreds of thousands of free audio and video podcasts from the catalog, and play the most popular podcasts, organized for you by topic, with the all-new Top Stations feature.

Features and Specs

Other than allowing users to easily discover and download online content, Podcasts allow users to:

  • Access simple playback controls
  • Enable Sleep Time to stop playing podcasts automatically while listening in bed
  • Share favorite episodes with friends through Mail, Messages or Twitter
  • Enjoy all their audio and video podcasts in a single app
  • Explore thousands of podcasts, as well as shows in 40 languages
  • Use Top Stations to discover new podcast series on various topics such as the arts, business, comedy, music, news, sports and many more
  • Browse by audio or video podcasts, or see what’s popular in the Top Charts
  • Subscribe to receive new episodes automatically for free
  • Stream episodes and download and listen while offline
  • Sync podcast episode from iTunes to Mac or PC
  • Sync episode playback for seamless transition between devices

Users can sync podcast episodes only if their devices are running on iTunes 10.6.3 or later. Streaming or downloading online content also requires Internet access via Wi-Fi or cellular data connection. Additionally, the app will be compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, third- and fourth-generation iPod Touch, and iPad.

Users could already explore and download podcasts on iTunes. However, they could not subscribe to podcasts and have the new episodes download automatically, unless they were using the iTunes desktop version.

The arrival of Podcasts came earlier than expected, as recent rumors indicated that it wouldn’t be available until later this year as part of the iOS 6 system update. Peter Kafka of All Things D reported earlier this month that a new podcast application will be available for Apple’s next mobile operating system. This move reflects changes employed in iOS 5, when the company separated its iPod application into different options for music and video.
