According to DigiTimes’ latest report, Apple’s next-generation iPhone will feature a quad-core processor that is based on Samsung’s Exynos 4 architecture. However, its clock speed or graphics processing capabilities are not reported.

A5 Chip on Apple Devices

Last year, Apple introduced its iPhone 4S that featured the dual-core A5 processor clocked at 800 megahertz. It was first introduced in the iPad 2, where it ran slightly faster at 1 GHz because of its larger form factor and bigger battery.

On the other hand, the third-generation iPad didn’t unveil a next-generation chip when it was introduced earlier this year. Instead, the company revealed the “A5X.” The new chipset suggested an evolutionary upgrade from its predecessor, as it featured an updated integrated graphics processor. The mobile phone’s built-in GPU was upgraded to quad core to push the 3.1 million pixels found on the tablet’s high-resolution Retina Display.

The processor is based on Samsung’s 45-nanometer, low-power architecture, which is also found in A5 CPU in the iPhone 4S and iPad 2.

Heating Up the Mobile Phone Processor Competition

In case Apple will build a next-generation quad-core ARM CPU for its next iPhone, it can be labeled as A6 if it will feature significant updates. It is speculated that when the company introduces a quad-core processor, it will heat up the competition against other quad-core smartphones. As posted on DigiTimes:

Competition for quad-core smartphones will heat up in the fourth quarter of 2012, triggering by the roll-out of much speculated new iPhone and models built based on Qualcomm’s quad-core chips, according to industry sources.

Samsung, HTC, LG, and Meizu introduced a quad-core smartphone during the second quarter of this year, with Galaxy S III as the most notable handset that was introduced to date. On the other hand, ZTE and Huawei Device announced their respective quad-core units during the Mobile World Congress this year, although there would be delay on the launching of their upcoming mobile phones.

Meanwhile, Samsung’s latest mobile phone has only been available in international markets, while the 4G LTE-capable unit, which was released in the United States, features a dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor. The South Korean electronics company will release a quad-core LTE-powered Galaxy S III in Korea.

More quad-core smartphones are expected to be introduced in the second-half of this year, while Apple’s next-generation iPhone is expected to be announced this fall. The company is also slated to launch their rumored iPad Mini and iOS 6.
