Following the announcement of Nintendo Land, a multiplayer and social networking hub for Nintendo players, it looks like the next-generation Xbox and PlayStation consoles will follow suit.

Although it is yet to be verified, Graeme Ackers of Studio Liverpool, recently discussed the possibility of having social networking feature on the so-called Xbox 720 and PlayStation 4. He said that it could be fun for gamers to help their friends to achieve certain goals. In relation to this, Ackers speculated that in about five to 10 years, game consoles will be more in favor of social interaction.

The Future of Social Networking on Gaming

Game director Stuart Tilley also agreed that game consoles nowadays have opened the door for social networking. He even pointed out that most users of PlayStation Vita go online. That said, developers of game consoles can find more and better ways to take advantage of this growing trend. He also added:

Affecting your mate’s single-player career could be something really fun to do, and something we’re going to look at to do. You don’t want to switch on your console and fall out of your social sphere, and I think that’s going to become one of the big things. I think in five, ten years for now it’s going to be really challenging for anyone to do a successful game that isolates the player.

In addition, Ackers predicted that console gaming may include cross-platform functionality in the future. This could further improve the social networking aspect of playing video games.

But whether Microsoft and Sony will bring social networking on their next consoles remains to be seen. In case both companies decided to do it, it may take awhile as the next-generation Xbox and PlayStation is speculated to hit the stores between late 2013 and early 2014.

Meet the Nintendo Land

During the 2012 Electronic Entertainment Expo last month, Nintendo showed off its new Wii U, together with the titles that will be available for the console. Other than the game titles, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime also announced the upcoming availability of Nintendo Land.

This feature is a virtual theme park being developed by Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort creator, Katsuya Eguchi. Basically, Nintendo Land will serve as a hub multiplayer and social networking. Both the Wii U console and the multiplayer hub will be available in time for the holidays.
