It was reported that Porsche will preview its plans for a Panamera-based wagon concept this September, in line with the upcoming Paris Motor Show. The concept car is set to give clues as to what could lie ahead of the model’s production versions.

Additionally, unveiling a Panamera wagon concept car could be part of their parent company’s—Volkswagen—growth strategy. Thus, it is expected that a final production decision will arrive by 2015, after gauging the public’s reaction to the concept car.

In the Horizon: Porsche Panamera

Also known as shooting brake, the Porsche Panamera wagon was conceived after customers hinted a demand for a more versatile version of the car. People would want to have a wagon that has more luggage space than today’s liftback model.

If that would be the case, the new car would form part of the vehicle’s second-generation lineup. It would also compete against a bevy of entries, including Mercedes Benz’s CLS shooting brake. As stated by a source close to the situation:

“It is one proposal we are looking at to increase the reach of Panamera. From the feedback we’re receiving right now, there appears to be sales potential for such a car in certain markets, especially Europe.”

Inside Porsche Panamera’s Hood

While it would feature style rather than trunk space, Porsche’s new Panamera wagon will provide buyers with greater versatility than the automaker’s sports cars. It would be offered in a standard-wheelbase configuration, although the car manufacturer is considering a long-wheelbase variant for selected markets.

The second-generation Panamera will also share underpinnings with some Bentley models. In relation to this, Porsche vehicles are expected to get Bentley’s recently announced twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 gasoline engine. This is part of Bentley’s strategy created by its former chief, Wolfgang Dürheimer.

Although Porshce is yet to reveal their facelifted Panamera wagon, the new model is definitely in the works. Other than the car’s variant, the automaker is also said to be working on coupe and cabriolet versions of the Panamera. It will be based on a short-wheelbase structure, and it could also serve as a replacement for Bentley’s Continental GT and GTC.
