Due to a handful of speculations of what the rumored iPad Mini would look like, some were prompted to create a mock-up of the upcoming device. Moreover, there were also claims that the rumored tablet will be smaller than the existing models, as well as resembling the iPod Touch.

What the iPad Mini Would Look Like

Although the rumor about the iPad Mini has been roaming around for months now, there were only a few leaked images associated with the device. Furthermore, it didn’t gain much attention compared to the next-generation iPhone. However, rumors about the smaller tablet recently gained traction, and pundits put the speculations together to have an idea of what the iPad Mini would look like.

According to rumors, the upcoming device will be 7.2 mm thick, making it thinner than the new iPad. It will also measure 7 inches, which could enhance the use of one-hand operation for the users. The most prominent of all speculations, however, is the thin bezel that is visible around the screen when the unit is held at portrait orientation. This feature is meant to make the device thinner and lighter, as well as consistent with the iPod Touch design.

In addition, the tablet’s lighter weight could prompt Apple to boast it as one of the device’s main features. The iPad Mini may also feature a non-Retina Display that is the same with the iPhone 3GS. That being said, a low-resolution screen can drop the tablet’s price within the $200 and $250 price range.

John Gruber of Daring Fireball also added:

The iPad Mini, based on my best guess hunch dimensions of 200 x 135 x 7.2 mm = 193,680 cubic mm. Divide and you get 70 percent. The Nexus 7 weighs 340 grams, so, let’s guess that the iPad Mini will weigh just 265 grams.

For comparison, the Wi-Fi-only iPad (3) weighs 652 grams, and the Amazon Kindle 3G with keyboard weights about 247 grams. So a sub-300-gram smaller iPad would be pretty light.

The rumors came from a number of purported leaks, with the first image being a speculated image of the iPad Mini’s back housing published by Apple.pro. There were also photos indicating that the upcoming device will feature a rear camera, which fuels the claims that the Cupertino-based company will include higher-end feature for certain versions of the smaller tablet.

Just days ago, there were also images of the iPad Mini’s rumored flex cable, which appears to feature a smaller dock connector. This goes in line with the recent reports that Apple is ditching its 30-pin version to a compact 9-pin solution.

It is yet to be known whether an iPad Mini will really land on stores. However, there were rumors that it will be announced following the launch of the next-generation iPhone in September 12.
