NPD DisplaySearch analyst Richard Shim cited upstream supply chain sources that Apple is working on a 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display. He also speculated that initial output volumes of the said device will be higher than the current 15-inch version.

Retina Displays for 13-inch MacBook Pro

According to Shim, Apple’s upstream supply chain sources are now working on a 2560 x 1600-pixel display bound for the smallest MacBook. The analyst goes on to say that Samsung, LG Display and Sharp are all working on the new panel to meet higher initial volume.

It is believed that the company is planning to yield higher initial output volumes for the 13-inch MacBook Pro compared to its 15-inch cousin, which was launched last June. Prior to this, company’s stock of laptop dwindled quickly after being unable to meet demand due to low display yield rates. In fact, it is only recently that Apple was able to keep up, with shipments now quoted at two to four business days.

In relation to this, Shim estimated yield rates will possibly reach “million and a half range” if suppliers can reach rate of 70 to 90 percent. He also pointed out that the manufacturing capabilities of the three suppliers can factor into how many display will be ready for assembly.

Possible Fall Release

Meanwhile, the production timeline of the rumored 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display points to a fall release. This goes in line with the previous reports that Apple would launch their laptop this September. The rumors come on the heels of multiple sightings of unknown MacBook Pro on online benchmarking site Geekbench.

Apple’s 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display is identified on Geekbench as “MacBook Pro10,1”, while its predecessor is labeled as “MacBookPro9,1”. On the other hand, the “10,2” identifier was spotted on an online battery testing site. It hints at a Retina version of the 13-inch MacBook Pro, as its recently updated predecessor is labeled as “MacBookPro9,2”.

While nothing is set to stone yet when it comes to their 13-inch MacBook Pro’s release date, Apple is expected to unveil their next-generation iPhone on a yet-to-be-announced September event. There were also reports that the company will announced their iPad Mini on October, prior to the release of a revamped iPod Nano and iPod Touch.

With all the Apple rumors gaining traction for the past months, it appears that people are in for some great news this fall.
