The McLaren MP4-12C Spider made its debut in Detroit yesterday at Woodward’s Vinsetta Garage. However, it was not the Volcano yellow drop-top that was seen at the Pebble Each; instead, the car comes in Volcano red.

Prior to this, Mark Vaughn of AutoWeek posted his review about the MP4-12C, saying that it is built for fast fun.

Best and greatest supercar ever! So easy and fun to drive. Easy and very progressive oversteer when you hammer the throttle or lift off a little sideways into a turn. Not much understeer, unless you really push it. Superb! Fun!

Under 12C Spider’s Hood

Since the vehicle already made its appearance at the Pebble Beach, some may already know the details. The McLaren MP4-12C comes in all its carbon-fiber and composite glory.

The 12C Spider gets its power from a 3.8-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 616 horsepower and 442 pound-foot of torque. Power is transferred at the rear wheels using a seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission, which is directed by forward or reverse buttons. On the other hand, its split-second shifts are popped off with steering wheel-mounted paddles, which—according to designer Frank Stephenson—give “the exact same feel Lewis Hamilton gets when he shifts.”

Furthermore, its exterior was shaped almost entirely by function. The car manufacturer also added that due to the car’s rigid body, the conversion to the Spider added only 88 lbs. Majority of the weight came from the power-folding, hardtop mechanicals. Once folded away, the top is hidden under two rear cowls that also serve as rollover protection.

In terms of performance, the vehicle runs to 63 mph in 3.1 seconds and 100 mph in just 6.1 seconds. The quarter mile takes off in 10.8 seconds, with a clocked speed of 134 mph. It also tops out at 204 mph, just 3 mph slower than its hardtop cousin. Next year, both the Spider and hardtop MP4-12C will feature a lift system, which will raise the cars when pulling into driveways or other areas with low clearance.

Inside, there were no aerodynamic consideration, as its climate controls are on the door and everything else is on the center console. The tops of the front fender are clearly visible, and it hides the top of the front Pirellis.

Although it’s not that perfect, there isn’t anything big that needs improvement on the car. The McLaren 12C Spider also comes with two soft travel bags that fit under the hood. It is now on sale in North America at $268,250.
