Search engine giant Google, together with its manufacturing partner ASUS, is said to be working on a new Nexus 7 model. Set for an October launch, the Android tablet is equipped with cellular radio for wireless data connectivity while on the go.

Gearing Up For the Production for Nexus 7 with 3G

A well-placed insider spoke with MoDaCo last weekend and said that the rumored Nexus 7 with 3G is coming next month. It will be similar with the current Wi-Fi model, with the wireless radio for mobile data as the only known change. However, there are no indications if the device can connect to high-speed, 4G Long Term Evolution networks.

In addition to this, it was reported that ASUS is ramping up the production of the upcoming tablet. It was also reported that it is right on schedule for a yet-to-be-announced launch date. If ever the Nexus 7 with 3G becomes a reality, it would possibly surpass Amazon’s current Kindle Fire model, which is only available in Wi-Fi connectivity.

Prior to this, the original Google Nexus 7 was the first Android tablet to be released with Jelly Bean. It features NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor and 1.2-megapixel camera, and it comes with either 8 GB 0r 16 GB storage capacity.

It was aggressively priced at over $300 in order to loosen Apple’s grip on the tablet market. In relation to this, people could expect that Google’s rumored tablet will be more expensive than its Wi-Fi cousin.

Competing Small-form Tablets

On the other hand, Amazon is set to hold a media event this Thursday. The online retailer is expected to unveil new Kindle Fire models on that day, which could potentially feature a 3G or 4G LTE variant.

Prior to this, Apple has offered cellular data connectivity with its iPad when the first model was released on 2010. Moreover, its third-generation tablet was the first Apple device to include high-speed 4G LTE connectivity.

What Lies Ahead for Small-form Tablets?

Google’s Nexus 7 with 3G is the latest addition to the recent manufacturers that were rumored to release a new model in the coming weeks. With the search engine giant’s Android device and Amazon’s upcoming 7-inch Kindle Fire models, there’s no doubt that the competition in the small-form tablet market is heating up.

In addition, Apple is expected to release the 7.85-inch iPad Mini this fall. The smaller iOS tablet will be available alongside the existing 9.7-inch model.
