For the first time since it was launched in October 2011, Apple’s iPhone 4S was outdone by Samsung Galaxy S III as the top-selling smartphone in United States last month. However, Canaccord Genuity’s Michael Walkley said that this will be short-llived. That’s because the Cupertino-based company is expected to reveal its next mobile phone next week.

Walkley said in a note to investors last Tuesday that sales for iPhone on U.S. carriers have been soft prior to the launching of next-generation iPhone. With that, Samsung latest flagship smartphone was able to take the spot.

Meanwhile, the data from carriers indicate that many U.S. customers are holding off to buy a new mobile phone until Apple unveils its so-called “iPhone 5.” The Galaxy S III was the top-selling smartphone in Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile, while iPhone 4S remained on the top spot at AT&T.

Apple’s iPhone 4S was actually at the third place last month, following the Motorola Razr Maxx. It is reigning second on Sprint, while it is not available in T-Mobile. As Walkley stated on the note:

We believe this is the first month since the iPhone 4S launched in October 2011 that it was not the top-selling smartphone in the U.S. market. However, our checks indicated strong consumer interest and likely demand for the iPhone 5, and we believe Apple will return to strong number one smartphone share in the U.S. post the iPhone 5 launch.

The Much-awaited Next-generation iPhone

On the other hand, it was reported that Apple started sending out an invitation to the media this week for its much-awaited San Francisco event on September 12. In relation to this, the company is expected to announce and take pre-orders for their next-generation iPhone on that day. It will be followed by a U.S. release on September 21.

As posted on Mashable, the iPhone maker sent out an invitation to the member of the press to an event on September 12. It has a prominent number “5,” which indicates that it will be about the launching of its upcoming handset. It will take place in the company’s favorite venue for big unveilings, the San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, at 10 a.m. Pacific Time.

Additionally, the next-generation iPhone is expected to feature a larger 4-inch display and smaller 9-pin dock connector. It will also boast the company’s latest mobile operating system, the iOS 6.
