Marriage of 3D and Porn Films Should Get a Second Chance

It’s safe to say that many of us don’t enjoy Hollywood subjecting us to 3D films. Many times the movie has been converted to 3D in post-production, which leaves us with an unsatisfying, nauseating and expensive night out at the theater. However, when done correctly, a 3D movie can offer an entertaining, amazing, and more in-depth movie experience. Think Avatar. So, why couldn’t that work in the adult industry as well?

Before you laugh at the thought, just remember that the merger between porn and 3D technology is nothing new. Back in 1969, there was the 3D adult film The Stewardesses. It went on to become a surprise commercial hit, and it even out-grossed many Hollywood studio films at the time. Eventually, pornographic 3D films became more comical than erotic, and the fad ended by the mid 1970s.

Today, the 3D technology we have, while still expensive, is far superior and more commonplace than what was available in the ’60s and ’70s. So, why not give the marriage between porn and 3D a second chance? We think it does, and here’s why 3D pornos should make a comeback.

It Can Help a Financially Struggling Industry

First off, it comes down to money. Globally, these sort of films can make a studio some serious cash. For example, the so-called world’s first erotic film, Sex and Zen, opened in Hong Kong in 2011. And guess what? It was a financial hit. The film even surpassed Avatar’s opening day numbers. While that may not be the case in the prudish United States, almost every other part of the world could release a film like Sex and Zen in the theater, where they could easily make a profit.

But, what about the adult film industry here at home, where we can find porn for free? For starters, Penthouse has their own 3D channel and site where you can watch your daily updates of favorite Penthouse Pets in 3D in the comforts of your home. However, if you’re looking for something a little more high-tech, then check out what Bad Girls in 3D has to offer.

The company made a splash at the 2009 Adult Entertainment Expo in Las Vegas after unveiling their home entertainment setup. This included a 60-inch Mitsubishi 3-D-ready HDTV, shutter glasses, and a gateway to the 3D adult content that can be downloaded from their site. It costs about $4,000, plus, the $20 month subscription for content. However, the company’s president, Lance Johnson, is passionate and certain that this will be porn’s future.

The Benefits of 3D Porn

Just because companies in porn can make money and are willing to invest in 3D doesn’t mean that people will actually go for it. So, why would people want to pay for—and enjoy—3D porn?

Well, that’s our second point. 3D pornos offer many features that 2D doesn’t. For starters, the 3D experience can actually make you feel like an active participant in the film, as opposed to, just a passive viewer. There’s also the numerous interaction features, such as which positions you would like to see in the film, and of course, there’s the detailed point-of-view action.

3D and porn can actually work. It has the possibility to financially help the struggling adult film industry, while at the same time, giving viewers a more interactive and realistic experience. Plus, there’s the technological benefits. Even though making a 3D film is expensive, people like Lance Johnson from Bad Girls in 3D, realizes that to make this work one of the things they’ll have to do is to be ahead of Hollywood in technology.

Who knows, maybe someone like James Cameron will be thanking a porno company for their advancements in 3D technology someday.
