New iPhone 5 on Verizon and Sprint Fumble Talk and Data Service

Although there are new iPhone 5 models that support simultaneous voice and data over LTE, there were reports that the networks Verizon and Sprint were incompatible. In relation to this, AT&T is the only U.S. wireless carrier that can offer this service.

No Simultaneous Voice and Data on Verizon and Sprint

The simultaneous voice and data feature enables users to browse the mobile Web or use other data services while making a phone call. Verizon offers a number of LTE mobile devices that are compatible with Apple’s CDMA equivalent, SVDO. However, a spokesperson told The Verge that its version of iPhone 5 will not be able to handle the simultaneous voice and data feature. That is even if they connect the device to the carrier’s LTE network.

The iPhone 5 was designed to allow customers to place a voice call on the Verizon Wirelss network, while letting customers access to the Internet over the Wi-Fi.

In addition, there were claims that Sprint will not support SVDO either, as the company will be using the same CDMA model as Verizon. The report surfaced following the announcement that Verizon and Sprint will be offering the same version of iPhone 5. This means that Sprint will not bring the simultaneous voice and data to its version of the handset.

Apple’s iPhone 5 on AT&T

On the other hand, AT&T boasts the functionality as a stand out feature over Verizon. The carrier will bring the simultaneous voice and data with Apple’s iPhone 5 on both its HSDPA+ and LTE networks.

With the various LTE bands that are being used by different carriers for the iPhone 5, it can be difficult to decide which model to purchase. But now that it’s already confirmed that Verizon and Sprint will not support simultaneous voice and data, it can lighten the selection process a bit.

Pricing and Availability

Apple’s iPhone 5 is available in 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB capacities, costing $199, $299, and $399 respectively. The handset is now available for pre-order, and the company posted its shipping estimates. It only took less than two hours for Apple to run out of the initial batch of its much-awaited handset. That’s why it was stated that the mobile phone will come in two weeks for all models. On the other hand, the iPhone 5 will have a U.S. release on September 21.
