Just three days after it became available to the public, Apple’s iPhone 5 was able to achieve record-breaking sales of 5 million units. In addition, the company announced yesterday that over 100 million devices were upgraded to iOS 6. As stated by CEO Tim Cook:

Demand for iPhone 5 has been incredible and we are working hard to get an iPhone 5 into the hands of every customer who wants one as quickly as possible. While we have sold out of out initial supply, stores continue to receive iPhone 5 shipments regularly and customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date. We appreciate everyone’s patience and are working hard to build enough iPhone 5s for everyone.

Overwhelming Demand for iPhone 5

Earlier this month, it was reported that pre-orders of the iPhone 5 exceeded 2 million within its first 24 hours of availability. This beats iPhone 4S’ 2011 sales record by more than 200 percent. According to Apple Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Philip Schiller:

iPhone 5 pre-orders have shattered the previous record held by iPhone 4S and the customer response to iPhone 5 has been phenomenal. iPhone 5 is the best iPhone yet, the most beautiful product we’ve ever made, and we hope customers love it as much as we do.

Launch sales of Apple’s latest flagship handset topped the record weekend last year, in which iPhone 4S was able to roll out 4 million units in its first three days. However, initial sales of the iPhone 5 were less compared to previous predictions because huge demand was able to outstrip supplies.

It should be recalled that Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray surveyed lines at Apple stores in Boston, Minneapolis, and New York. Considering the large crowds the analyst predicted that the company could sell 8 million iPhone 5 this past weekend.

Despite the overwhelming demand, Apple is now able to ship majority of the pre-ordered mobile phones, although a lot are still scheduled to arrive this October.

International Availability

At the moment, Apple’s iPhone 5 is available in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, United Kingdom, and United States. This September 28, the latest iOS smartphone will become available in 22 more countries and over 100 nations by the end of the year.

Earlier this month, the iPhone 5 was able to have a record-breaking start when its 2 million pre-orders were sold out within its first 24 hours. It doubled the record set by iPhone 4S last year, although actual first weekend sales did not double the previous model’s launch.
