AU Optronics Will Build Screens for iPad Mini

There were claims that Apple tapped AU Optronics to build displays for its so-called iPad Mini. The report came from the industry website, DigiTimes. Citing unidentified resources, the report stated that AU Optronics recently got orders to deliver screens for the 7-inch tablet.

Potential Suppliers for iPad Mini Display

AU Optronics has been identified previously as a potential supplier for iPad Mini displays. Aside from that, there were claims that LG Display Co. would build the 7.85-inch screen for the device.

The news came on the heels of Instapaper creator Marco Arment’s discovery of a pair of unknown iPad models in development logs. The two “curious entries” appeared on device stats for his iOS application, and showed a purported iPad 2 device with A5 processor and 512 megabytes of RAM.

Expected iPad Mini Release

In relation to this, there were also reports that Apple is gearing up for a media event to unveil its so-called iPad Mini. As AMOG reported yesterday, the company is planning to send out an invitation to the member of the press on October 10. This indicates that the iPad maker will host the actual event on October. 17.

If proven true, this means that the iPad Mini will become available to the public later this month or early November. Of course, that is based on Apple’s previous timeframes for product launches.

The report that Apple will send out an invitation to the media people surfaced after an anonymous “major Apple investor” talked with Philip Elmer-DeWitt of Apple 2.0. Citing multiple sources, the investor revealed that the company is gearing up to launch its iPad Mini:

According to our source, who asked not be named, there appears to be some truth to the widespread rumors that Apple is preparing to launch a smaller and cheaper version of the iPad—often called the iPad Mini or iPad Air and usually described as having a 7.85-inch screen.

What our source adds is the specificity of the date: The press, he says, can expect invitations to go out on Oct. 10.

It is expected that the iPad Mini will feature a 1024 x 769-pixel screen resolution, which is similar to the iPad 2. This would enable developers to run iPad 2 application on the smaller tablet without modifying it. The same number of pixels will also be packed on the 7-inch display, giving it a higher resolution than the second-generation tablet.
