It appears that the PlayStation speaker and faux executive Kevin Butler is in trouble with Sony. Last week, it was reported that the company filed a lawsuit against the Bridgestone Tires company and Wildcat Creek, Inc. advertising firm.

Sony vs. Bridgestone Tires and Wildcat Creek

The hilarious and arrogant Vice President of Everything on Sony, Kevin Butler, is portrayed by the actor Jerry Lambert. Aside from that, it was revealed on Corporation Wiki that he is the president of Wildcat Creek, Inc. It is in this light that Sony Computer Entertainment of America filed a lawsuit against the two companies for violating its intellectual property, which is the Kevin Butler character.

According to a statement released by Dan Race, Sony’s senior director of corporate communications to gaming website VentureBeat:

Sony Computer Entertainment America filed a lawsuit against Bridgestone and Wildcat Creek, Inc. on September 11. The claims are based on violations of the Lanham Act, misappropriation, breach of contract, and tortuous interference with a contractual relationship.

We invested significant resources in bringing the Kevin Butler character to life, and he’s become an iconic personality directly associated with PlayStation products over the years. [The] use of Kevin Butler character to sell products other than those from PlayStation misappropriates Sony’s intellectual property, creates confusion in the market, and causes damage to Sony.

Prior to this, Lambert started appearing in a series of Bridgestone promotions. Bridgestone and Wildcard Creek are running a “Game On” promotion, providing customers with a $70 American Express gift card or a Nintendo Wii console.

Recently, the company released an ad that features Lambert in a white lab coat. The character appears with a Nintendo console and running a copy of Mario Kart Wii. However, this ad was removed by Bridgestone on its official YouTube account.

More About Kevin Butler

SCEA debuted the Kevin Butler character in 2009 for a MBL 09: The Show baseball title TV spot. During that commercial, Lambert portrays the role of the character as the Director of Game Accuracy.

He then continued on the main spokesperson for the PlayStation 3’s “It Only Does Everything” campaign, which ended in 2011. Lambert picked up that character on the latter part of the year, following Sony’s return in the advertising scene with their “Long Live Play” TV spot series.

Because of the lawsuit that Bridgestone and Wildcat Creek is facing, it remains unknown as to what this could mean with the Kevin Butler character and Lambert’s career with Sony.
