After indicating that the PlayStation Store will be having a new look last month, Sony finally unveiled its website at a special press event in London. The store refresh will be its first major platform update since that hacking incident that caused it to shut down for five weeks last year.

New PlayStation Store: What to Expect

Leon Hurley of Official PlayStation Magazine UK reported that Sony’s online gaming store will get an overhaul next week. Hurley even shared some screen shots of how the upgrade would look like and what it does. As previously stated by the company:

PlayStation Store for PS3 is set to get a new look from October 2012, making it even easier for you to find and download the content you love from the comfort of your sofa.

The PlayStation Store will feature left-to-right scrolling, better content filtering, and weekly promoted “hero character” along with value-added content. It is believe that the website’s overhaul will be related to the launch of the new PS3, PlayStation Mobile, and reintroduction of comics.

Prior to this, many PlayStation owners have shared their feedback on the current PSN Store. Some of them stated that the website is a bit confusing, difficult to find what you’re looking for, and quite slow, and some icons and sections fail to load completely.

Scheduled Maintenance

In relation to this, Sony also announced that the PlayStation Store will be down for maintenance on Monday, October 15. During the downtime, the following services will be unavailable:

  • Store
  • Account Management
  • Account Registration
  • Transactions via Consoles
  • Sony Entertainment’s official website

Those who will access the said services will see a notification page. On the other hand, online play shouldn’t be affected.

What Lies Ahead for Sony’s PlayStation Store

The new PlayStation Store is coming on October 17 for PAL territories that include Europe, Asia, and Australia. U.S. fans will see the new website on October 23. The company pointed out that it took a lot of comments and feedback on board.

Sony added that it aims to create a massive improvement of the website so that everyone can have better user experience. They promised that the website redesign will provide better navigation system to users who are searching their way through 20,000 game content and 100,000 movies and TV shows.

Whether a new website will provide a decent web interface for the users remains to be seen. But hopefully, it would speed up the loading of icons, as well as eliminate the ugly pauses from screen to screen.
