Based on the sales figure during the first month of Apple’s holiday quarter, the company is on track to sell 4.8 million Macs for the season. However, this report represents declining sales year after year. According NPD Group’s latest data, the Mac sales in US were down 16 percent annually. But this report was contradicted by Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray. The analyst said that Mac sales have exceeded NPD’s expectations by an average of 12 percent in the last three quarters. This suggests that the overall Mac sales were down just 4 percent year after year. Munster estimated that Apple’s Mac sales will be down 7 percent annually during the last quarter of the year, which is tantamount to 4.8 million units. Meanwhile, NPD suggests that the laptop’s sales were down 40 percent compared to last quarter’s. The analyst said that this is a normal trend since the back-to-school sales have already ended.

The focus of the December quarter will likely be on iPhone 5 sales, and we note our supply checks indicate that iPhone 5 supply has improved significantly in the last three weeks.

Last year, Munster interpreted NPD’s October sales, while the data proved accurate in projecting Mac sales for the quarter. The analyst said that the sales figure indicated that Apple is right on track to selling between 5.1 million and 5.3 million Macs during that three-month period. In addition, the actual holiday sales of the said device fell squarely within that range. The company also set a new record during that time for being able to sell 5.2 million Macs during the December 2011 quarter. This is tantamount to a 26 percent increase from the same period in 2010. What Lies Ahead for Apple’s MacBook Pro This quarter, it is expected that sales will include the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display. Also included on the list is the new Mac Mini with Ivy Bridge processor, as well as the redesigned iMac that is slated to hit the stores later this month. However, Apple’s Mac sales are dominated by portable machines, while majority of the company’s MacBook lineup was refreshed earlier this year. In addition, Apple’s latest update features more desktop machines. Although Mac sales for the December quarter are yet to be seen, it is likely to see a decrease compared to last year. That’s because industry pundits are speculating that people would be clamoring for the iPhone 5, iPad 4, and iPad Mini.
