With 2012 soon coming to an end, people from the gaming industry are starting to speculate whether a next-generation PlayStation is in the works. In fact, one video game analyst—Michael Pachter— believes that the purported PlayStation 4 is due to launch around October or November 2013.

I don’t think Sony wants to launch behind Microsoft again, so I’m confident we’ll see a PS4 in October or November 2013,” explained the Wedbush Securities Analyst, talking to Play magazine.

It isn’t likely that they will launch earlier, as it doesn’t make sense to get out too far in front of software, and I’m pretty confident that few developers have been working on PS4 games for more than a year or so. Holiday 2013 will be a comfortable window for Sony, and will give them a chance to get a head start on Microsoft.

On the other hand, Pachter believes that Sony will continue to sell the PlayStation 3 even though its successor is already out in the market.

The PS3 probably has a solid three years left for sales, so it should make it comfortably to a 10-year life span,” he continued. “There are a lot of people who are uncomfortable spending $250 for a console, so I think price cuts to the $199, $149 and $99 will extend the life of a console.

New Gaming Consoles: Needed Now More than Ever

While some industry pundits believe that the gaming consoles available in the market today are adequate and no upgrades are needed, some are convinced that the introduction of a next-generation console is very important.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said in an interview with VG 24/7 about the need for new systems, as well as his hopes that it won’t take long for developers to deliver the next-generation console.

The transition has been very long. We need new consoles and at the end of the cycle generally the market goes down because there are less new IPs, new properties, so that damaged the industry a little bit. I hope next time they will come more often.

Guillemot added that hardcore gamers are now hungry for new systems, and how a new console represents the right moment for innovation.

Everybody who is taking risks and innovating is welcome because there are lots of hardcore gamers and those guys want new things, where the mass market will be more interested in having the same experience. It’s not aware as much of what is going to change its experience. So, the beginning of the machines is always a good time for innovation.
