As posted on Microsoft’s official blog last Wednesday, it was announced that the next mobile operating system update for Windows Phone 7 will be available sometime next year. This led to a stream of complaints coming from readers and existing Windows Phone users, saying that they will have to wait at least two months after the release of WP8 to get some of the new features.

Delayed Windows Phone 7.8 Release = Upset Users

Aside from knowing that the release of Windows Phone 7.8 is delayed, what upsets the users is the fact that Microsoft’s latest mobile OS—Windows Phone 8—is not compatible with smartphones running WP7.

They feel that the company abandoned the early adopters of the mobile OS, and they will soon be neglected by developers that won’t be releasing software for older platforms. As one user posted on the comments:

I feel like I wasted my money, sadly not recommend to my friends to buy Windows Phone now, one year with my Lumia and now will be abandoned.

One reader also added: “Disappointed. Extremely disappointed. Beyond extremely disappointed. The first [Windows Phone 7.8] announcement was in June of 2012. Five months later, we still don’t have it.”

The blog post was largely a repeat of what the upcoming mobile OS will feature, and the news was written on the last paragraph of the post. As stated on the message:

We know you’re eager to the get the Windows Phone 7.8 update, and we want you to know that we’re working closely with our hardware and carrier partners get it tested, approved, and rolled out to as many devices as possible in early 2013.

A Look Inside Windows Phone 7.8

Although Windows Phone 8 will not be compatible to previous Windows Phone models, it was reported that that Microsoft will roll out the Windows Phone 7.8. This would bring some of the cool stuff found on WP8 on existing models.

Included in the list is the Live Tiles, which provides faster access to more of the user’s favorite people, photos and apps. It also has new and unique lock screen features that let users display the Bing Picture of the Day automatically.

New apps are also coming to Windows Phone 7.8 such as Angry Birds Space and Angry Birds Star Wars. In addition, Words with Friends and Draw Something are already available.
