Apple Teaming Up with Sharp to Test HDTVs

The Wall Street Journal published a report yesterday, hinting on Apple’s latest effort regarding an Apple TV. As posted on the online publication, the Cupertino-based company is teaming up with the struggling Japanese electronics maker Sharp.

Apple: Testing Large Format HDTV

Based WSJ’s supply chain sources, Apple has been testing “a few designs” for large format HDTV. However, the publication warns that the company may not actually build the device. One source also stated that the purported Apple TV is not yet a formal project, and that it is still in the early stage of testing.

For the past years, it was rumored that Apple has been working on a prototype design for the so called Apple TV. But its recent collaboration with Foxconn and Sharp may be an indication of an imminent production.

The recent rumor goes in line with previous speculations that Foxconn Chairman Terry Gou invested in Sharp’s Sakai LCD plant. In turn, Apple’s manufacturing partner has netted 37.6 percent stake in the Japanese company. Last month, there were claims that Apple also invested about $2.3 billion to keep Sharp alive, as it is a key supplier of displays used in iDevices and other products.

Tim Cook: Hinting an Apple TV Release

Earlier this month, AMOG reported about Apple CEO Tim Cook making the strangest hint regarding the purported Apple TV. In an interview with Brian Williams of NBC’s Rock Center, the CEO said that they have big plans for the living room.

When I go into my living room and turn on the TV, I feel like I have gone backwards in time by 20 to 30 years. It’s an area of intense interest. I can’t say more than that.

As of the moment, Cook’s comments are the strongest clue yet that indicates that the company would be working on a television set. There were even claims that the device is already in the works. In relation to this, the CEO used the phrase “intense interest” to refer to their Apple TV set-top box. This feature is an existing accessory that streams movies, TV shows and other content.

Hints of an Apple TV have been circulating for years, and inside knowledge have claimed that the final product would be anything from full-fledged HDTV to a revolutionary set-top box that is cloud enabled. However, sources are yet to offer tangible evidence that will support these speculations.
