Phil Fish, creator of the popular Xbox Live Arcade game Fez, once said that PCs are for spreadsheets and that Fez is a console game designed for the couch and the controller setup. Because of that, many thought that the indie game would never have a PC port.

However, that thought may pass, as a recent blog post from Polytron website revealed that Fez will finally be ported to other platforms.

2012 was crazy.

But what now?

2013 is going to be an interesting one too.

For one, FEZ will finally be ported to other platforms.

Yes, I’ve heard you, dozens of people emailing me everyday telling me how much of an idiot I am for not porting FEZ to everything.

We also have some exciting plans for the soundtrack, and something about a US branch?

Beyond that however, the future is uncertain for Polytron.

Fez: From XBLA to Steam

With Fez having a success in XBLA, the next logical step would be to bring the game to Steam on PC. Other indie games like Super Meat Boy become much more successful after moving to Steam, and it could do the same for Fez. Moreover, Steam’s Big Picture mode could still make Fez playable on the couch with a controller.

But other than Fish’s vague reference of releasing the game to other platform, nothing much is known. Release date, prices, and platforms are still guesswork at this point.

Fish has been a polarizing figure in the independent game industry, especially last year after he found fame in Indie Game: The Movie. Released in June 2012, Indie Game: The Movie was a terrific documentary that focused on Fish’s development of Fez. It also featured the struggle of Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes in launching Super Meat Boy.

Plot and Gameplay

Developed by Polytron, Fez is a puzzle/platform game that revolves around Gomez. He is a two-dimensional creature who lives in a flat 2D environment. He then encounters a strange and mysterious artifact called Hexahedron, which gives him a magical Fez hat. Because of this, he is able to perceive a third dimension.

But just as Gomez starts to explore his new ability, the Hexahedron suddenly fractures and explodes. Because of that, the world around him glitches up and freezes. A floating hypercube explains to him that he must collect the fragments of the Hexahedron, which have been scattered across the world, before the world is torn apart.
