Last Tuesday, Microsoft announced that their Surface tablet lineup will have a new member next month—the upcoming Microsoft Surface Pro with Windows 8. In addition, a new Windows Surface RT will have a 64 GB version.
Prior to this, the company launched the first version of the tablet in October, which is the Surface RT. Rolled out together with the new Windows 8 operating system, the tablet costs $499.
Introducing the Surface Windows 8 Pro
The Surface Windows 8 Pro will be available starting February 9 in the US and Canada. It can be purchased at the company’s online store, Staples, and Best Buy.
Its 64 GB version is tagged at $899 and will come with a Surface Pen. Compared to Surface RT that runs on the bare-bones version of the operating system and ARM processor, the Surface Windows 8 is powered by Pro Intel Core i5 processor. This gives the tablet more power and enables it to run more programs.
Because it takes advantage of the full version of Windows 8, the Surface Windows 8 Pro offers the same OS experience that a user would find on a regular Windows desktop or notebook. The device was originally set for a January release, but it encountered unknown issues that caused minor delay.
Furthermore, Microsoft is said to be “taking a phased approach” with the Surface Pro’s availability. As stated by the company’s spokesman:
It will be available initially in the US and Canada will additional markets to follow in the coming weeks and months.
Other Products and Surface Accessories
Meanwhile, the standalone 64 GB Surface Windows RT will boast an ARM processor. It will cost $599, with the touch cover sold separately.
Aside from that, Microsoft will launch new Surface accessories in markets where the device is still available. This will include the limited-edition Touch Covers, which will be available in red, magenta and cyan, and costs $129.99 each. Also to be released is the Wedge Touch Mouse Surface Edition, which is priced at $69.95.
Microsoft also announced that the Surface Windows RT will be available in more countries. The 13 additional markets are Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. As of the moment, the Surface RT is available in the following countries:
