Last Tuesday, Apple announced the 128 GB model of their fourth-generation iPad with Retina Display. This doubles the previous maximum storage capacity found on existing models.
It was reported that the 126 GB iPad 4 will be available starting February 5 in black or white. It will have a suggested retail price of $799 for the Wi-Fi-only model, while the cellular-capable unit will cost $929.
Apple’s iPad lineup now extends to four different capacities, with the 16 GB model as its entry level. The iPad, on the other hand, still has the 64 GB as its maximum capacity.
Higher Capacity, More Reasons to Love iPad
Announcement of the 128 GB iPad 4 came at the heels of newly released iOS 6.1 software update. There were reports that the software update included references to a new iOS device with a storage capacity of 128 gigabytes.
Prior to this, the maximum capacity of iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad is at 64 GB. As stated by Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Market:
With more than 120 million iPads sold, it’s clear that customers around the world love their iPads, and everyday they are finding more great reasons to work, learn and play on their iPads rather than their old PCs. With twice the storage capacity and an unparalleled selection of over 300,000 native iPad apps, enterprises, educators and artists have even more reasons to use iPad for all their business and personal needs.
During the announcement of the new 128 GB iPad, the Cupertino-based company revealed that almost all of the Fortune 500 and more than 85 percent of the Global 500 gave the tablet a test. These firms use large amount of data such as 3D CAD files, X-ray, film edits, music tracks, project blueprints, training videos, and service manuals.
Other than the 128 GB capacity, nothing much has been changed on the fourth-generation iPad with Retina Display. It still includes the Apple-designed A6X processor and the front-facing FaceTime HD camera.
Apple also noted that the iPad runs more than 800,000 apps that are available on the App Store. This includes over 300,000 apps designed specifically for iPad, which features a wide array of categories such as books, games, business, news, sports, health, reference, and travel. The tablet also supports over 5,000 newspapers and magazines offered in Newsstands, and over 1.5 million books available in iBookstore.
