A Round-Up of All the Super Bowl 2013 Movie Trailers

The Super Bowl is known primarily for two things. The biggest sporting event of the year and over-the-top commercials. However, with so much going on, it’s easy to neglect one of our favorite aspects of the Super Bowl: Movie trailers.

While the game itself was thrilling, as it typically is when the final two teams in the NFL battle for the Lombardi Trophy, the ads have become less than desirable. Thankfully, movie studios have been stepping it up lately. And the trailers that ran during Super Bowl XLVII were no exception. They definitely got us excited for a promising 2013 at the movies.

So, in case you missed them, here are the Super Bowl 2013 movie trailers.

Iron Man 3

Iron Man 2 was a bit of a letdown, but after last year’s awesome and spectacular event that was The Avengers, we can’t wait to dive back into the Marvel Movie Universe. Iron Man 3 looks to be an action-packed standalone film filled with sleek and brand-new armor. It will also kickoff Marvel’s ‘Phase Two’ on May 3. The film features Robert Downey Jr., Ben Kingsley, Don Cheadle, Gwyneth Paltrow, Guy Pearce, Jon Favreau, Rebecca Hall, William Sadler, James Badge Dale, and the voice of Paul Bettany.

Fast & Furious 6

Personally, we were never really fans of The Fast & Furious franchise, but the fifth installment changed our minds. During the Super Bowl, Universal unveiled the first look at the sixth film of the franchise. Besides seeing Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Jordana Brewster, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, and Elsa Pataky all return to reprise their previous roles, we were also treated to perhaps the most over-the-top and ridiculous antics ever seen in any Fast & Furious movie. We’ll find out if the hype is worth it when the movie hits theaters on May 24.

Star Trek Into Darkness

The sequel to the 2009 film is one of the most anticipated flicks of 2013, probably because director J.J. Abrams is going on to direct the new Star Wars film. Still, Star Trek Into Darkness seems to be a visually stunning and epic adventure. While there remains plenty of mystery surrounding the film, the trailer did get us more excited for the return of the Enterprise and its crew on May 17. Star Trek Into Darkness stars Alice Eve, Anton Yelchin, Benedict Cumberbatch, Bruce Greenwood, Chris Pine, John Cho, Karl Urban, Peter Weller, Simon Pegg, Zachary Quinto, and Zoe Saldana.

OZ the Great and Powerful

Disney is taking a huge gamble on its prequel to one of the most beloved films of all time. While the Super Bowl commercial for Oz The Great and Powerful may not have unveiled anything new, it did remind us that the Sam Raimi-directed film is right around the corner on March 8. So far, the film looks impressive visually. It stars James Franco as Oscar Diggs, a circus magician swept away to Oz, who is caught in the middle of a power struggle between the witches Glinda (Michelle Williams), Theodora (Mila Kunis), and Evanora (Rachel Weisz).

World War Z

The 30-second spot for the adaptation to the Max Brooks book didn’t show us anything new, except for the fact that we’re all pretty much screwed on June 21. While World War Z has been plagued by rewrites and production delays, we expect the Brad Pitt zombie epidemic thriller to be one of the bigger movies of 2013.

The Lone Ranger

Disney had yet another trailer during the big game. This time it was their retelling of The Lone Ranger, which stars Armie Hammer as the masked hero and Johnny Depp as his faithful companion Tonto. With producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski, the filmmaking team behind the blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean , you can expect plenty of action and humor. We’ll see if the trio of Depp, Bruckheimer, and Verbinski can strike gold again when The Lone Ranger rides into theaters on July 3.

Didn’t get enough of Dwayne Johnson during Super Bowl XLVII? Besides a spot for Fast & Furious 6 and the ‘Morning Run’ commercial for Got Milk, the WWE Champ had another trailer on Sunday night for Snitch. The trailer for Snitch was released about two months ago, but it needed another push since it opens on February, 22. The action-drama sees The Rock go undercover to bust drug dealers in an attempt to get his son out of prison. But do you really care about the plot? It stars The Rock. And that’s all we really care about. For those interested, Snitch also stars Susan Sarandon, Barry Pepper, and some familiar faces from TV, like Nadine Velazquez (The League), JD Pardo (Revolution), Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead), Michael Kenneth Williams (The Wire, Boardwalk Empire), Harrold Perrineau (Oz, Lost) and Benjamin Bratt (Law & Order).
