In a new survey conducted by Pew Research Center, it was revealed that a number of Facebook users got tired of using the social network. This could be associated with the fact that some Facebook users got burned out of their friends’ “drama”.

The Importance of Facebook to Users in 2013

According to the report, 28 percent of those who participated in the survey said that Facebook has become less important to them than it was a year ago. About the same number of people also said that they expect to spend less time on the social network this year. In relation to this, over a third of the users said that the amount of time they spend on the site has decreased over the past year.

When asked with open questions about their experiences on the site, exhaustion, frustration, and irritation were the common denominator among users. Some users even replied “I was tired of stupid comments,” “It was not getting me anywhere,” “Too much drama,” or “I got tired of minding everybody else’s business.”

The Pew Internet Project Director Lee Rainie pointed out that these types of answers represent the views of a certain type of users. In the social networking spectrum, the ones in the middle are the ones trying to figure things out. Thus, they regularly raise questions.

On the other hand, 59 percent of those surveyed said that Facebook is as important to them today as it was a year ago. Additionally, 69 percent said that they plan to spend the same amount of time on the social network this year as in the past.

However, 61 percent of the participants said that they had taken a break from using Facebook at some point. This break, which took several weeks or so, can be attributed to lack of interest, irrelevant content, or being too busy.

Is Facebook in Danger?

Despite users’ Facebook usage dialing down, it appears that the social media giant is not in danger. The company continues to add new users, even reporting a 40-percent increase in revenue during the last quarter. Its ad revenue from mobile users has also been increasing, which is deemed important for its future growth.

Pew Research Center also revealed that 69 percent of online adults use a particular social network, which is a 50-percent increase from 2009. By far, Facebook is the most popular social network in the US. It is used by two-thirds of online adults, compared to 20 percent of LinkedIn users and 16 percent on Twitter.
