Following its victory in the game show Jeopardy, IBM’s Watson supercomputer is now taking a new role in health care by being a doctor’s office helper. There’s now the Watson tablet and app that health workers can use to treat lung cancer. Another Watson app is also used by health insurance companies to figure out which claims to pay.

IBM’s Watson for the Cancer Program

It was reported that IBM’s supercomputer analyzed 1,500 lunch cancer cases from medical records, as well as millions of pages of medical text. The machine can also learn when corrected for giving out an incorrect answer.

With the help of these data, Watson will be able to suggest which treatment will most likely succeed, depending on the machine’s level of confidence in them. In fact, the Maine Center for Cancer Medicine and WestMed in New York’s Westchester County will use the supercomputer’s lung cancer app this March.

On the other hand, health insurance firm WellPoint is already using the Watson app in Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, and Wisconsin. The app is used to sift through insurance claims and determine which ones to authorize. Moreover, they will be selling both lung cancer app and health insurance app as part of an agreement with IBM.

From Supercomputer to Entry-level Servers

Since the success of IBM’s Watson in Jeopardy, the company said that the supercomputer’s performance has increased to 240 percent. It has also been used to analyze finance and health care data. Aside from that, the machine is used in university setting to research big data, analytics and cognitive computing.

There were reports that IBM is moving Watson’s core technologies to new entry-level servers used in SMBs. They also announced recently that Power Express servers will integrate some hardware and software elements derived from Watson. Furthermore, it is expected that the company will expand the production-level deployments of Watson in new use cases and industries.
