Spring Breakers: The Movie That Proves Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens Aren’t Disney Stars Anymore

If you had told me that there was an upcoming movie called Spring Breakers, starring Disney staples Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens, I would have bet that it would have been a horrible movie about BFFs having a great time during Spring Break that was targeted towards young women. You know, another sort of Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants type of flick.

Well, that’s kind of true. Except that Spring Breakers isn’t targeted towards young women. And will be far from PG.

Here’s the plot, if you haven’t heard anything about this R-rated movie:

Faith (Selena Gomez), Candy (Vanessa Hudgens), Brit (Ashley Benson), and Cotty (Rachel Korine) have been best friends since grade school. They live together in a college dorm and want to go on an adventure. The friends decide to go to Florida for vacation but lack the funds. So, they decide to rob a restaurant for the cash. While in Florida, they get arrested at a party for drugs and land in jail. A drug and arms dealer/rapper named Alien (James Franco) bails them out in order to hire them to do some, um, dirty work for him.

Sure. It sounds a bit campy in a fun way, but then we saw some of the international posters, which you you can check them out here in case you missed them (also, make sure you check out the official website for more photos and details). And then we found out that there was a threesome scene between James Franco, Vanessa Hudgens and Pretty Little Liars star Ashley Benson. Plus, Gucci Mane is in this thing too! Suddenly, this has become a must-see flick.

Spring Breakers released a three-minute preview at Cannes Film Festival in May 2012. The worldwide premiere was at the Venice International Film Festival on September 5, 2012, with the North American Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 7, 2012. Thus far, the film is receiving mixed to positive reviews, which is pretty impressive for a movie that was written in only 10 days.

Spring Breakers opens on March 22 in New York and Los Angeles and will expand on March 29. Make sure that you mark those dates on your calendar, because I don’t think many of us want to miss tween idols partaking in some…fun.
