MTV began releasing their “Hottest MCs in the Game VIII” on March 3, which will conclude on March 7, and the debate seems to have ticked off a couple of artists.

One of the artists not happy with the list is the always outspoken Kanye West, who came in at #7. Kanye stated his displeasure with the list when he checked in with Hot97 on March 5. “Yeah number seven bothers me,” he told DJ Enuff when he called into the show. Ye added:

“I think Wayne is the number one rapper in the world. I think him and Jay and Em and certain people are just the greatest rappers of all time. For me, I feel like in order for them to put me at number seven they had to bring up things they didn’t like. They didn’t like the Cruel Summer album. I’m like, that’s a compilation, it ain’t all rappers on G.O.O.D. Music. I mean Cruel Summer got the ‘Don’t Like (Remix),’ ‘Mercy,’ ‘Cold,’ ‘New God Flow,’ you know? And ‘Clique!’ You can’t name five records like that on no album.”

But Kanye wasn’t the only artist to take offense. A$AP Rocky, ranked #8, stopped by LA Leakers to explain why he’s the top MC in the game right now.

“All my videos are shitting on any Hip Hop video out there. Let’s be honest. The reason why everybody is wearing gold again is because of your boy. Everybody’s wearing diamonds. I’m the one who made the John Lennon shades with the glasses—everybody wearing it now, you see what’s going on now. Come on, who brought gold teeth back? Let’s be honest…Honestly, I brought it back in a dramatic way. I made braids hot. Let’s get off trends.”

I’m the first artist who grew enough balls to say, ‘I listen to Geto Boys, Three 6 Mafia, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, N.W.A. and Wu-Tang at the same damn time, and what?’ And I’m influenced by all of them…But moving aside from the fact that I broke boundaries with not only that, but what other rapper is on the cover of Vogue?

Forget trends, let’s get off trends. Lets get back to the music. Who brought double time back? Who was rapping like Bone? Nobody. Who brought that flow out? I don’t even use it no more. Everybody using this. Everybody rapping like that now.

It’s frustrating when I’m number eight. Don’t put me at all. I need to be number one.”

There’s no denying that both Kanye and A$AP Rocky have done their part to revolutionize and revitalize Hip Hop, both musically and in pop culture. They’ve both been influential in fashion trends, as well as, becoming two of the top MCs currently around. With that being said, both artists have valid points on why they should have been ranked in the top spot.

So, what do you think? Did MTV get the list right? Or, should have Kanye or A$AP Rocky been dubbed the “Hottest MC in the Game” right now?
