Following the announcement of Kinect for Windows pre-release developer program, Xbox enthusiasts started wondering if the Kinect that comes with Microsoft’s next-gen console can be plugged into their PC. Unfortunately, it’s less likely to happen.

In an email sent to Ars Technica by a Microsoft spokesperson:

The Kinect for Xbox One sensor will not have an adaptor that allows it to plug into a computer. [Instead], the new generation Kinect for Windows sensor will connect to computers using a standard USB3 port [emphasis added].

Same Different

Although the Xbox One, Windows, and the new-generation Kinect are built on shared technology, as well as have the same capabilities such as 1080p video, active IR mode, and wider field of view, it doesn’t mean that they are exactly the same devices. Moreover, the devices were not designed to be compatible with the other platforms.

Nevertheless, it appears like the ability to use the original Xbox 360 Kinect on Windows was an unintended bonus. That’s because Microsoft needs to offer compatibility with legacy Xbox 360 systems.
