A number of civil rights coalition, privacy groups and websites will stage protests on the Fourth of July against the US National Security Agency’s surveillance programs. They will also display a text of the Fourth Amendment to the US Constitution as part of the Restore the Fourth campaign.

Participating websites include WordPress, 4chan, Mozilla, Fark, Cheezburger.com, and Reddit where Restore the Fourth originated. Campaign organizers will also organize live protests in various cities such as Atlanta, Boston, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Washington DC.

The US NSA Surveillance Issue

The protests started when Edward Snowden, a former NSA contractor, leaked information regarding the agency’s widespread surveillance on US residents. Due to this, Snowden faces charges in the US for theft of government property, unauthorized communication of national defense information, and willful communication of classical communications intelligence information to an unauthorized person.

Representatives from NSA and US Office of Director of National Intelligence remain mum on the planned protests.
