If you’re seeing a certain number of users popping up in your News Feed more than others, it’s because of Facebook’s ranking algorithms. But this time, these algorithms are expected to work better than ever. In a blog posted by the social network’s engineer, Lars Backstrom:

With so many stories, there is a good chance people would miss something they wanted to see if we displayed a continuous, unranked stream of information. Our ranking isn’t perfect, but in our tests, when we stop ranking and instead show posts in chronological order, the number of stories people read and the likes and comments they make decrease.

Pushing Old Stories You Might’ve Missed

Facebook users usually don’t have the time to scroll down their entire News Feed to see stories that were posted since they last logged in. The tweaked News Feed algorithm will help users see more interesting stories. With the tweaked ranking algorithm, the social network puts older and popular stories to the top of the News Feed.

The popularity of a status update will be based on the engagement or promotion that it garners. They will also pick up on the people a user engages the most, the type of stories he likes or comments on, as well as the stories that he usually hides from his News Feed.

Facebook will roll out these tweaks to the News Feed to the public in the near future.
