Other than boasting an enhanced version of its predecessor, the iPhone 5S is expected to feature a convex home button with embedded fingerprint sensor technology.

Fingerprint Sensor Technology on iPhone 5S

Last year, Apple acquired biometric security firm, AuthenTec, which uses capacitive and RF technologies in biometric chips. This method images fingerprints in a different way than the existing optics-based system.

Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities predicts that the inclusion of the fingerprint sensor will keep the iPhone ahead of competing Android and Windows Phone devices. This can also presage the Cupertino-based company’s entry into secure mobile payments, as well as yield a safer way for users to access services like iCloud and iTunes.

Sapphire Convex Home Button

To house the fingerprint sensor on the home button, it was also reported that the iPhone 5S will boast a convex button which is made from sapphire.

According to Kuo, this gem is resilient to scratches, which can protect the embedded sensor. In addition, a single home button will make consumers less likely to be confused as to where to place their finger for scanning.

A convex home button can be recalled from a patent filed by the company last June. The said patent describes an encapsulation method for a fingerprint sensor within a confined space.

Apple is expected to reveal their next-generation iPhone model on September 10.
