KGI Securities’ Ming-Chi Kuo stated on a research note that component suppliers of Apple iPad and iPad Mini will start shipping parts in late third quarter of 2013. However, the analyst is quick to note that the devices’ build schedule is likely to preclude the tablets from being unveiled at Apple’s upcoming media event.

It was rumored that the late refresh cycle of the iPad is due to a redesign, which will bring the device more in line with the existing iPad Mini. The changes will affect mass production that is set to kick off on the fourth quarter of this year. Furthermore, Kuo predicted that the so-called iPad 5 will boast TDD-LTE support, an exotic cellular protocol used by China Mobile.

As for the iPad Mini’s second iteration, Kuo expects that it will feature a Retina display and next-generation “A7X” processor. The extra horsepower is needed to power the high-resolution screen, but it is yet to be known whether the system-on-chip will be under clocked to preserve battery life. The said processor will also be used on the iPad 5.

The analyst noted that the Cupertino-based company pulled in the launch time for the “iPad Mini 2” to vie against small-form tablets with high-resolution displays. In addition, Kuo predicted that Apple will release a low-cost iPad Mini next year. To cut down on costs, the current model’s screen will carried unto the budget tablet, while its processor will be based on the existing A6 architecture.

Ming-Chi Kuo expects that the iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2 will hit the stores by the year’s end, although a specific release date is yet to be established.
