It was reported that Capcom’s upcoming Dead Rising 3 will feature handcrafted world and procedurally generated zombies. This means that no two zombies will look the same.

During the recent Xbox One event in Sydney, Australia, Capcom Producer Mike Jones added that the technology of Microsoft’s next-generation gaming system enabled them to achieve much compared to its predecessor. For instance, texture reuse in previous iteration of Dead Rising games was common. The Dead Rising 3, on the other hand, is completely handcrafted.

You’re looking at more custom work and less reuse. We’re not using the same textures over and over again, nor are we using the same geometry over and over again. Every building and every interior in Dead Rising 3 is handmade and handcrafted. You’ll never see the same building twice.

He also added that players’ demand for more details made creating open world games an expensive pursuit. And in order to achieve it, Capcom has introduced procedurally generated zombies.

It’s all procedurally generated: Hair styles, clothing, colors, textures. And the gore is too: missing jaws, missing eyes… it’s all totally dynamic. That’s a whole system that we built. We didn’t just model the zombies, we had to model the pieces and the system puts them together.

Dead Rising was originally planned to be released for current-gen consoles. However, Capcom’s plan of creating a seamless open world appears unlikely for the aging hardware. Now, the upcoming game will be part of the 20 launch titles for the Xbox One, which is set to be released on November 22.
