Food for Thought: Food That Helps the Brain

Guys always have things to do – if it’s not working all day, it’s spending time on a hobby or with friends and family. So, it only makes sense that you might forget important things here and there. But, what if there was a way to combine a favorite hobby of yours – eating – with improving your memory? Well, you’ll be happy to know that yes indeed – there are foods that can help keep your brain healthy!

Probably the biggest fear for older guys who are having trouble with their memory is that they’re developing Alzheimer’s. Although there will be a cure for Alzheimer’s in the future, that’s not right here, this minute. So, if your memory isn’t as sharp as it used to be, there are foods you can eat that can either help to prevent Alzheimer’s, or slow down the affects.

The first of these foods are actually a category: Green leafy vegetables. You might think some of the foods in this category, like Spinach, taste disgusting. But, they’re among the best sources of Vitamin B that you can get. Specifically, the Vitamin B helps protect against strokes, which is a major cause of dementia. Also, eating green leafy vegetables might also help protect against harmful amino acids that could damage brain cells. Alzheimer’s is caused by a breakdown of cells located in the hippocampus, which is where memories are stored.

Another food that is great to eat is Salmon. You’ve probably heard how Salmon is rich in Omega 3, which is a good fat. Bad fat (like the kind you get from junk food) is what results in strokes and heart attacks. The good fat actually helps lower cholesterol by reducing inflammation and ensuring that arteries are properly lubricated.

If you like blueberries, then you’re in luck – they’re excellent for you, and a great way to help improve brain function. A prime cause of forgetfulness is, obviously, aging brain cells. However, the components in blueberries enable older brain cells to work together as they did when you were younger. So the next time you see a blueberry muffin nearby (preferably lowfat), go ahead and eat it!

Another food that you should start eating more of is broccoli. Alight, so what if it makes you fart? You think farting is funny anyway, so why not do it with the knowledge that you’re making your brain healthier too? There are lots of ways to eat broccoli – in salads, as a side dish, and also in soup. Just don’t drench your broccoli in fatty cheese sauce, since that would be defeating the purpose.

So, now you know just a few of the foods that you could start eating right away to improve your brain health. If you are starting to lose your memory, it’s important to note that it might not be Alzheimer’s. Everyone gets absentminded, but if it’s really starting to become a problem, be sure to see your doctor so that you can start on a treatment plan as soon as possible.
