There’s a reason why John McAfee continues to receive media attention. His saga keeps getting stranger and stranger.
McAfee is without question an intelligent tech pioneer. From 1968 to 1970 he was a NASA programmer at their Institute for Space Studies in New York City. From there, he worked as a software designer for Univac, then an operating system architect for Xerox and as a software consultant for Computer Sciences Corporation. However, it wasn’t until his employment at Lockheed in the 1980s where be found his calling. After receiving a copy of the Pakistani Brain computer virus, he developed software to combat viruses. In 1987, he founded the anti-virus company that bears his name. Today, McAfee is one of the largest anti-virus companies in the world.
Despite his financial success, John McAfee’s personal life has become infamous. He has lost millions of dollars in bad investments and real estate. More troubling, however, has been his demeanor and mental state.
Friends have claimed that the tech pioneer has become “scary”and “strange”. He has also reportedly been using the potent psychosis-inducing drugs known as “bath salts” for the last several years. And, he’s gone on and on about he he’s eluded police in Belize, since he believes that they want to exterminate him.
Things became increasingly twisted on November 12 when authorities wanted to bring in McAfee for questioning in the murder of his neighbor, an American expatriate named Gregory Viant Faull. Instead, McAfee fled to Guatemala seeking asylum. But, he was ultimately obtained after writers from Vice Magazine accidentally gave up his location. And, instead of laying low, he’s been blogging from prison.
On December, 6 he wrote:
I am in jail in Guatemala. Vastly superior to Belize jails. I asked for a computer and one magically appeared. The coffee is also excellent. Only time will tell what will happen. No one has a crystal ball. However, I would be truly shocked if I did not conduct the press conference tomorrow as I had originally planned. Stay tuned. I believe, by the way, that blogging from a jail cell might be a groundbreaking activity. Let’s see if it [...]”
Just a day later, he was briefly hospitalized for chest pains. Early reports suggested that McAfee had a heart attack, but the chest pains stemmed from stress. He’s apparently feeling better and is expected to stay until Monday.
In the meantime, his legal team is working to appeal the Guatemalan decision to grant his asylum. A decision could be made within the next 48 hours.
McAfee also asked the U.S. Embassy is there was anything they could to do to assist him, he was told that there is “nothing they can do”.
The entire saga has many questions regarding John McAfee. Did he shoot his neighbor in the head? Is he insane? Why won’t he return to the United States? Is he just media hungry?
While it may days, and perhaps even weeks and months, to answer these questions, one thing is certain. This weird journey will be heavily covered in the media. And, we’ll probably be getting constant updates via McAfee’s blog.
