Mikhail Kalashnikov was the inventor of the AK-47 which is an iconic assault rifle died at the age of 94.his ingenuity made him earn lots of admiration all over the world, but his legacy became a topic of controversies as the weapon he invented is responsible for the world’s bloodiest conflicts. According to the defense minister Sergey shoigu statement “Mikhail Kalashnikov’s whole life is shining example of the dedication to serving his country and the Russian president expressed deep condolence over his death.
Mikhail Kalashnikov was suffering from intestinal and heart problems and on the 17th November he was admitted in the hospital in central Russia. This is the place where the huge plant where eponymous rifles are produced is located. A mandatory autopsy will reveal the official cause of the death of Mikhail Kalashnikov. A public funeral has to be organized by the regional administration and till now no date is yet been decided.
Mikhail Kalashnikov was famous for his prudent lifestyle and he was feted as a straightforward hero. He was a self taught farmer who was never able to finish high school but he achieved a lasting and remarkable feat of engineering in his twenties. He was often asked by the people if he regrets being the inventor of such weapon which killed huge amount of people in the last fifty years and his answer was
“ I invented it for the protection of my motherland . I am having no regrets and I bear no responsibility for how people have used them”
He said once that he is proud of the weapon he has invented but he feels sad that it is also being used by the terrorists. He also said that he would prefer to have invented such a machine that can assist farmers with their work in fields such as a lawnmower.
Indeed in Izhevsk museum where he spent most of is life working at the factory was named after him, there people are going to find a lawnmower which was invented by him .But it is not that he will be remembered for.
Mikhail Kalashnikov was born on 1919 and he was the 17th child of his parents. When he was of the age 11, during the campaign Joseph collectivization his family had their land impounded and the entire family was exiled to the Siberia. Despite of having a tough time in the life he chose to go into a tank brigade and his engineering aptitude was all of sudden apparent. Mikhail Kalashnikov was allowed to develop a number of modifications like a running time meter; a tank shot counter which were to be adopted by the entire red army and made him popular. The legendary idea of creating AK-47 came into his mind when he was recuperating in hospital and it was not a eureka moment but was a trial and error process of improvements and modifications. Whatever be the story behind invention the weapon, still after sixty years of invention it remains the world’s most omnipresent weapon.
