The annual gathering, which took place this past Memorial Day weekend, offered display booths where visitors meandered and browsed through hundreds of books and DVDs on hypnosis. In its third successful year, Hypno Expo has become immensely popular and for the cost of $299, participants attended presentations that included practical hands-on instruction and demonstration on hypnotic techniques, and advice on establishing and marketing a professional hypnosis practice.

Participants came from every corner of the globe, representing a diverse and innovative collection of educators, scientists, trainers, coaches and practitioners. The registration fee for May 20th-May 26th covers a well-rounded amalgam of information which includes: unlimited social networking, 64 free lectures to choose from, 3 shopping days in the Exhibitor Hall, a concert, an awards dinner, live entertainment and fireworks off the pier.

One important focus of this conference was to mainstream hypnosis in complementary health care. The meeting offered almost 115 selections on the subject of hypnosis education including: hypnosis, hypnotherapy, scientific research, business practices, legal issues and marketing strategies for hypnotists, hypno-therapists and complementary healthcare professionals.

To this day, there are many popular misconceptions concerning the topic of hypnosis. One concern is the belief that hypnosis is a form of unconsciousness resembling sleep. Modern research suggests that it is rather “a wakeful state of focused attention and heightened suggestibility with diminished peripheral awareness.” The words hypnosis and hypnotism both derive from the term, neuro-hypnotism, which was coined in 1841 by Scottish physician and surgeon, James Braid.

There are some terms that may need clarification. Hypnosis refers to a mental state usually induced by a procedure known as a hypnotic induction, which in turn is usually manifested by a series of preliminary instructions and suggestions.

Hypnotic suggestions may be delivered by a hypnotist in the presence of the subject (hetero-suggestion), or may be self-administered (self-suggestion or autosuggestion). The use of hypnotism for therapeutic purposes is referred to as hypnotherapy.

Robert Otto has been a force for learning and innovation for more than thirty years and he heads two international organizations of hypnotists with a combined membership of 10,000. He is also the chief executive officer of the International Medical and Dental Hyponotherapy Association and the International Association of Counselors and Therapists.

Otto conducts seminars and shares his knowledge and experience with those who wish to become proficient in these areas. His teachings offer valuable skills and insights that can come into play on many occasions within a lifetime.

Hypno Expo has expanded the image of Daytona Beach. Now in addition to NASCAR, Spring Break and Bike Week, Hypno Expo can be proudly added for the third year in a row to the list of landmark Florida attractions.
