Git-R-Done: Larry the Cable Guy

We know him best as Larry the Cable Guy, one of the four Blue Collar comedians. But, where did he come from? Who is he really? Is what we see on stage how he really is in real life?

No, of course not. “Larry” is an ingenious character that made this talented comedian extremely famous.

In the Beginning…

He was born as Daniel Lawrence Whitney on February 17, 1963 in Pawnee City Nebraska to Shirley Whitney and Tom Whitney Sr. (a preacher and former guitarist for the Everly Brothers). He has two older siblings: Tom Jr. and Debbie.

When he was 16 years old, he and his family moved to Palm Beach County, Florida. After his schooling was complete, Whitney worked at a few different places such as Wendy’s and the Ramada Inn, where he was a bellhop. It was there that customers, coworkers and friends encouraged him to go into stand-up comedy.

His Road to Stardom

In 1986, on a dare, Whitney got up onstage during an open mike night at a local club and he was hooked. By 1988, he had quit his job at the Ramada to pursue his career in comedy.

In 1991, Whitney got a job in radio comedy where he would call into the radio station as fictional characters. While working in that position, he was asked to call in as a cable installer and thus, “Larry the Cable Guy” was born.

His Comedy Career

Whitney was huge on the radio scene for many years, as he was a DJ all over the country in cities such as Blue Springs, Missouri Springs; Omaha, Nebraska; Orlando, Tampa, and Jacksonville, Florida; Baltimore, Maryland; Albany, New York; and Tehachapi, California.

Since his radio days, Whitney has flourished in his comedic career, as he has made 6 comedy albums and been in 8 movies.

Over the years that we have grown to idolize Larry the Cable Guy we’ve heard him say some hilarious things. In particular, there are three phrases that he repeats a lot in his acts.

Repeated Sayings

1. “Git-R-Done”
2. “I don’t care who you are. That’s funny right there.”
3. “Lord, I apologize for that right there, and please be with the starvin’ pygmies down there in New Guinea. Amen”

He also has been known to throw some great short jokes and one liners in his act. These are three of his best.

Funniest Short Jokes

1. “I was more confused than Ray Charles with a Where’s Waldo book.”
2. “I tipped a stripper with Monopoly money and after that she said, ‘That’s fake money’ and I said, ‘Alright, well them’s fake titties.'”
3. “I was seeing a girl for about 6 weeks until someone took my binoculars.”

One thing you may have found surprising in Larry the Cable Guy’s biography is that the comedian is from Nebraska.

I don’t know if you’ve ever heard him in an interview as himself, Dan Whitney, but if you have, you would have discovered that the southern accent is completely fake!

I believe that this brilliant and talented entertainer who is extremely popular in show business and in comedy will continue to be very successful for a long time.

The great thing about Larry the Cable Guy (Dan Whitney) is that he is able to continue to bring us that genuine “dumb redneck” act, but with new fresh material.

Whitney is so good at his Larry the Cable Guy act that you probably wouldn’t know it was an act except that you realize that he really can’t be that dumb to be that calculated and he must be brilliant.
