The Hall of Shame: Murderers, Cheaters, and Other Sports Scandals

There was a time that conversations about top athletes had to do with scoring points, setting records, or acting as role models helping their communities.

These days, we hear about less about Hall of Fame icons and more about the criminals, cheaters, and other sports miscreants than ever before.

So with that It’s my honor (and their dishonor) to bring to you the first 14 members of the Hall of Shame, in no specific order.

1. Carlton Dotson and Dave Bliss

inside2 2005 06 15 dotson The Hall of Shame: Murderers, Cheaters, and Other Sports Scandals

This horrible tale starts in June 2003 with the report that Patrick Dennehy, a basketball player at Baylor University is missing.

After an investigation and tip-offs in the case, Carlton Dotson, a teammate of Dennehy’s was charged with the murder.

Of course, you can’t expect the first inductee(s) into the Hall of Shame to stop there.

As it turns out, Baylor University’s basketball head coach Dave Bliss was into a lot of underhanded activities such as not reporting players that had failed a drug test, improperly paying for some athletes’ tuition, and prompting coaches and players to lie to authorities by telling them that Dennehy was dealing drugs.

With cheating, drug using, lying to authorities, and murder all rolled into one, the Baylor University cohorts certainly deserve the first spot in our Hall of Shame.

2. Mike Danton

Our second inductee is former St. Louis Blues NHL hockey player who was arrested for attempting to hire a hit man.

The “hit man” he tried to hire turned out to be an FBI agent. He plead guilty to all charges.

I guess being out on that ice for all those years froze Danton’s heart into a solid block of ice.

3. Michael Vick

vick 288x300 The Hall of Shame: Murderers, Cheaters, and Other Sports Scandals

Former Atlanta Falcons quarterback, Michael Vick was found to be heavily involved in a huge dog fighting scandal in which around 2,000 pit bulls were involved.

An anonymous source says that Vick has been involved with this ring for quite some time.

This brings a new level of shame to sports fans everywhere.

Vick will be in the doghouse for a long time to come.

4. O.J. Simpson

oj simpson mshot The Hall of Shame: Murderers, Cheaters, and Other Sports ScandalsHere it goes: The controversy of O.J. Simpson.

No matter which side of the fence you sit on when discussing the murder of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman, you can’t deny the fact that he was seriously abusive to his wife.

This is not an opinion and he was not framed for this. It was a proven fact.

Does it make him a murderer? No.

Does it make him a slime ball with no scruples? Yes.

To top it off, in 2007, his was arrested and convicted for robbery receiving up to 15 years in prison.

So what’s the story this time and where are the proverbial gloves that support him being framed for the robbery? Simpson is just another sad disappointment in sports.

5. The 1919 Chicago Black Sox and Arnold Rothstein

Black Sox is actually a term used for the 1919 Chicago White Sox where eight players were banned from baseball for throwing the World Series to the Cincinnati Reds.

Allegedly, Arnold Rothstein bribed the eight players to do so.

Fixing baseball games – Is that a new kind of sport?

6. Tanya Harding

Tanya Harding has the dishonor of being the first woman inducted into the Hall of Shame.

In 1994, Harding conspired to have her figure skating rival Nancy Kerrigan brutally attacked so that her knee would be damaged and she wouldn’t be able to compete.

Harding won the 1994 U.S. Figure Skating Championships because Kerrigan wasn’t able to compete due to her injuries.

Kerrigan was able to recover and compete in the Olympics and she took a silver medal. However, Harding only finished eighth.

I guess she’s not as good as she thought she was.

7. Mike Tyson

tysonholyjun97 pic2 The Hall of Shame: Murderers, Cheaters, and Other Sports ScandalsIn 1991, Mike Tyson was arrested for rape and was tried and convicted of those charges the following year.

Upon his release in 1995, he began to box professionally again.

In 1997, he became infamous in the world of boxing due to his match against Evander Holyfield in which he bit a chunk out of Holyfield’s ear!

Perhaps this could have been avoided if Tyson ate before he stepped into the ring.

8. Spanish Paralympic Committee

The Paralympics is a special kind of Olympics for people with handicaps and one would think that this sort of event wouldn’t be tainted, right? Wrong!

The Spanish Committee produced fake documentation for ten out of twelve basketball players stating that their IQ was below 85 for a mentally handicapped basketball event in the Paralympics.

Of course, they won the gold medal, but later had to return it once their scandal was unveiled.

The Spanish Paralympic Committee all might have IQ scores over 85, but they’re still a bunch of dumbasses.

9. Ben Johnson

After Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson won the gold medal in the 100-meter event in the 1988 Olympics, he tested positive for “performance enhancing drugs” and was forced to give up his medal.

As a result, Carl Lewis received the gold medal. This goes to show you that cheaters never win, but they sure can run!

nba donaghy 070724 ms The Hall of Shame: Murderers, Cheaters, and Other Sports Scandals10. Tim Donaghy

In 2007, it was found that basketball official Tim Donaghy would bet on basketball games and was involved with organized crime.

The unfortunate part is that it raised suspicion among the organization and all of the basketball officials.

11. Danny Almonte

In 2001, Danny Almonte, a Little League pitcher, took his team all the way to the Little League World Series where he lead his team to victory.

The problem came in when it was discovered that Danny’s birth certificate was forged and he was actually 14 at the time of the Little League World Series, though his birth certificate said he was only twelve (the legal age limit for Little Leaguers).

That just goes to show you that some people never want to grow up.

12. Rosie Ruiz

This 1980 Boston Marathon runner accomplished an amazing feat: she won the Boston Marathon with the third fastest time ever accomplished by a woman and barely broke a sweat!

Later it was discovered that she joined the other competitors with only 1 mile left to go.

In 1982, she joined another group of people – prisoners. Ruiz was arrested for stealing $60,000 from a real estate firm and a year and a half after that, she was arrested again for solicitation of cocaine.

13. Ken Richardson and Stephen Wiles

In 1982, these two men cheated in horse racing in England by switching the alleged winner of a horse race, Flockton Grey with a faster veteran horse to ensure the win.

Both men were convicted of the crime of conspiracy to defraud.

It seems to me that both of these guys are full of horse manure.

1101890710 400 The Hall of Shame: Murderers, Cheaters, and Other Sports Scandals14. Pete Rose

In 1984, Pete Rose was exposed for being involved in betting on MLB games.

He refused to admit that he ever bet on his own team, but it only makes sense that he did.

How can you better ensure that you win a bet than to have some control on it from the inside?

Does he really think that we were born yesterday?

All in all, this is a great list to start off the Hall of Shame - the people we wish we could forget about in sports.

When you look all the corruption surrounding sports, it kind of puts a sour taste in your mouth, but just remember that there are plenty great athletes and sports figures that have integrity.

However, to these people and more that I’m sure will follow: welcome to the Hall of Shame and congratulations on making a complete ass of yourself in front of millions!
