You Might Be a Redneck if Your Name is Jeff Foxworthy

With his witty quotes and his fun redneck jokes, it has been said that Jeff Foxworthy is similar to a modern day Mark Twain.

“[Watching a baby being born] is a little like watching a wet St. Bernard coming in through the cat door” is one of his many funny quotes. So where did this American icon begin?

Growing Up

Jeff Foxworthy was born on September 6, 1958 in Hapeville, Georgia, where he was also raised for all of his childhood. He’s the oldest of three children and has a brother named Jay and a sister named Jennifer.

Foxworthy actually had other goals growing up as he went to Geargia Tech in Atlanta after graduating from High School. After getting his college degree, he went to work for IBM, where his father Jim worked, in mainframe maintenance. Foxworthy has stated that the business suit life really wasn’t him, but he didn’t know what he wanted to do, so he just kind of followed in his father’s footsteps.

The Beginning of His Comedy

In 1984, at the request his coworkers, Jeff Foxworthy entered a competition called the Great Southwestern Laugh-Off at a club in Atlanta called the PunchLine Comedy Club.

He won the competition and began to  perform in local clubs in addition to working at IBM. However, other comedians were telling him that he could make it big. Pretty much on a whim, without too much to go on, he quit his job at IBM and the rest is history.

Foxworthy’s Career in a Nutshell

The best thing about Jeff Foxworthy and his comedy is that he talks about things that everyone can relate to. He also seems to be very down to Earth and personable, which is a lot of his charm. By 1990, Jeff Foxworthy had already won “Best Stand-Up Comic” at the American Comedy Awards and in 1993, he released his album You Might Be a Redneck If….

In 1995, he was the star of The Jeff Foxworthy Show, a half hour sit-com that was cancelled after one season. Foxworthy admittedly said that type of show business really wasn’t him and he really wasn’t all that disappointed when the show was canceled. He made remarks that maybe he was just too southern. In the year 2000, he and the three other members of the Blue Collar Comedy team started their Blue Collar Comedy Tour as they all gained immense popularity.

Since that point, Foxworthy has found his niche in Hollywood with his Comedy Central show Blue Collar Comedy TV, which aired from 2004 to 2006. In 2007, Foxworthy broke into the world of television in a whole new fashion: as a game show host on the game show Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader.

Personal Life

Foxworthy has two daughters, Jordan (born in 1992) and Julianne (born in 1994) and has been married to his wife Pamela Gregg, an actress since 1985. He reportedly was married when he was in his late twenties to a woman named Nancy. It’s said that they just weren’t compatible, but his first marriage really isn’t mentioned much, so -shush! That’s basically it about his family life. It’s kind of boring: no mystical secrets or large deceptions.
